A Window to the Eastern Ghats
The journey from the coastal city of Visakhapatnam to the serene Araku Valley is one of India’s most scenic train routes, but the introduction of Vistadome coaches has transformed it into a world-class travel experience. These specially designed carriages
are engineered for sightseeing. They feature oversized glass windows, a transparent glass roof, and seats that can rotate 360 degrees, ensuring no breathtaking view is missed. As the train climbs through the Ananthagiri hills, passengers are treated to an immersive view of the surrounding landscape, from dense forests to cascading waterfalls. The air-conditioned environment provides a comfortable cocoon from which to enjoy the dramatic scenery, making the four to five-hour journey an attraction in itself.
Monsoon's Verdant Makeover
While the route is picturesque year-round, the monsoon season, from June to October, adds a layer of unparalleled magic. The rains breathe life into the Eastern Ghats, turning the landscape into a vibrant canvas of emerald green. The journey becomes a spectacle of nature's power and beauty, with temporary waterfalls streaming down rock faces and mist clinging to the valleys. The train passes through an impressive 58 tunnels and over 84 bridges, and emerging from the darkness of a tunnel into a rain-washed, verdant valley is an experience that photographers and nature lovers cherish. Waterfalls like Katiki and Chaparai, popular local spots, are at their roaring best during this season, often visible from the train itself.
Destination: Araku Valley
The journey is as compelling as the destination. Araku Valley, situated at an altitude of over 900 metres, is a tranquil hill station known for its sprawling coffee plantations, rich tribal culture, and stunning natural beauty. Upon arrival, visitors can explore attractions like the million-year-old Borra Caves, a geological marvel with fascinating stalactite and stalagmite formations. Other points of interest include the Tribal Museum, which offers insights into the lives of the local communities, and the Padmapuram Gardens. For those seeking more adventure, the region offers numerous waterfalls to visit, such as the Ananthagiri and Tadimada falls. The valley's famous organic coffee can be sampled and purchased at various outlets, providing a perfect souvenir of your trip.
Planning Your Panoramic Journey
The Vistadome coaches are attached to the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Express (Train No. 18551), which departs from Visakhapatnam early in the morning. Booking these coveted seats requires some advance planning, as they are in high demand, especially during peak tourist seasons and weekends. Tickets for the Vistadome coach (class code: EV) can be booked through the IRCTC website or app. It's advisable to book several weeks, or even a month, in advance to secure a spot. The journey takes approximately four to five hours, offering ample time to soak in the views. Many travellers opt for a rail-cum-road package, taking the Vistadome train to Araku and returning by road to experience the Ghat road from a different perspective.
