Understanding Pododermatitis
Pododermatitis isn't a specific disease, but a term for inflammation of the skin on the paws. If you notice your dog constantly licking or chewing their feet, or see redness, swelling, and itchiness, they may be suffering from this condition. It can affect
one or all paws, and in severe cases, can lead to painful sores, discharging lumps, and even lameness. The causes are numerous, ranging from allergies and parasites to foreign bodies like grass seeds getting trapped in the skin. It's a complex and often frustrating condition for pets and their owners alike.
The Monsoon Connection
During the Indian monsoon, the risk for pododermatitis skyrockets. The reasons are simple: constant moisture and high humidity. Paws are frequently wet from walks on muddy roads and through puddles, and the spaces between their toes can trap moisture, creating a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. This damp, warm environment makes it easier for secondary infections to take hold, turning a minor irritation into a significant problem. Keeping your pet's paws clean and, most importantly, dry after every single walk is the most critical preventative step.
The Soothing Power of Pet Balms
This is where a good quality pet balm becomes an essential part of your monsoon pet care kit. A paw balm is a topical, emollient ointment designed to soothe, heal, and moisturise dry, cracked, or irritated paw pads. More than just a moisturiser, many balms also form a breathable, protective barrier on the skin. This barrier can help shield the paws from the constant dampness and irritants found on wet streets, while also sealing in moisture to keep the pad skin supple and healthy. For paws already suffering from minor cracks or irritation, the right balm can help speed up the healing process.
What Makes a Good Pet Balm?
Not all balms are created equal. When choosing one for your pet, always opt for products with natural, non-toxic, and lick-safe ingredients. Look for a blend of nourishing butters and waxes. Ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and vitamin E provide deep moisturisation and help repair damaged skin. Waxes such as beeswax or carnauba wax are excellent for creating that protective barrier. Some formulations also include ingredients with natural anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial properties, like calendula or neem oil, which can be particularly beneficial for soothing irritated skin. Avoid products with artificial fragrances, parabens, or harsh chemicals that could cause further irritation.
A Guide to Application
For a balm to be effective, it needs to be applied correctly. First, always clean and thoroughly dry your pet's paws before application. Trapping dirt or moisture under the balm can make things worse. Scrape a small amount of balm, warm it between your fingers to soften it, and then gently massage it into each paw pad, making sure to get into any small cracks. Try to apply it when your dog is relaxed, perhaps just before a nap or at bedtime, to allow the balm time to absorb. A great tip is to distract your dog with a treat or a toy for a few minutes post-application to prevent them from immediately licking it all off.
