A Window to the Eastern Ghats
The train journey from the coastal city of Visakhapatnam to the hill station of Araku Valley has long been cherished as one of India's most scenic routes. This engineering marvel, a broad gauge line that climbs to an altitude of over 900 meters, cuts
through the magnificent Eastern Ghats, offering travellers a front-row seat to raw, natural beauty. For years, passengers have marvelled at the dense forests and deep valleys. Now, with the introduction of Vistadome coaches, this journey has been elevated from a simple commute to a premium travel experience, drawing tourists in droves. These specially designed coaches are all about maximising the view.
The Monsoon Spectacle
While Araku is a year-round destination, the Vistadome coaches have made the monsoon season particularly popular. The journey during these rainy months is nothing short of magical. The glass ceiling and oversized windows offer an uninterrupted panorama of the landscape as it comes alive. The rain transforms the rolling hills into a vibrant canvas of lush green, with countless seasonal waterfalls cascading down rocky cliffs. Mist hangs heavy in the valleys, creating a mystical atmosphere that feels worlds away from the city. Watching the rain streak across the glass roof while the train meanders through this verdant paradise is an immersive experience that standard coaches simply cannot replicate. The dramatic scenery, combined with the comfort of an air-conditioned cabin, makes it a perfect monsoon escape.
Inside the Glass Coach
The Vistadome experience is defined by its thoughtful design. The most prominent features are the massive glass windows and the transparent glass roof, which provide a near-360-degree view of the surroundings. The seats themselves are a major upgrade; they are plush, comfortable, and can rotate, allowing passengers to face the direction with the best view or turn to socialize with their group. An observation lounge at the end of the coach offers a unique vantage point to watch the tracks disappear into the distance. The coaches are equipped with modern amenities like LED lighting, a GPS-based information system with TV screens, and automatic sliding doors, ensuring a comfortable and convenient journey. This blend of luxury and unparalleled views justifies the high demand for these limited seats.
The Journey Itself
Attached to the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger train, the Vistadome coaches cover a distance of about 129 kilometres in approximately four hours. The train, which usually departs from Visakhapatnam in the early morning, embarks on a slow, winding ascent into the hills. The route is an adventure in itself, passing through an impressive 58 tunnels and over 84 bridges. Each time the train emerges from the darkness of a tunnel, it reveals a new, breathtaking vista. Key sights along the way include the Ananthagiri mountain ranges and the famous Borra Caves, which are near one of the train's halts. The journey through this rugged terrain showcases not just natural beauty but also the incredible feat of railway engineering required to build the line.
Planning Your Trip
Given their immense popularity, booking a seat in a Vistadome coach requires advance planning. Tickets are known to sell out months ahead, especially during peak seasons like winter and monsoon. The coaches are attached to the daily Visakhapatnam-Kirandul train (Train No. 18551 on the onward journey). Bookings can be made through the IRCTC website or app. When booking, you need to select 'AC Chair Car' (CC) or 'Executive Chair Car' (EC) to find the Vistadome option, often designated as 'EV'. Due to the high demand, the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway sometimes attaches an extra Vistadome coach during tourist season to accommodate the rush, but securing a spot remains competitive. For those who prefer an all-inclusive option, various tour operators and APTDC offer packages that bundle the Vistadome train journey with local sightseeing in Araku.
