A new chapter in Indian Railways history was written on November 1 with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Bengaluru and Mumbai. This service revolutionises overnight travel between India's tech hub and its financial capital.
A Landmark Connection
On November
1, 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper Express from Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru. The inaugural service marks a significant upgrade in connectivity between two of the nation's most critical economic centres. This train, designed for comfortable overnight journeys, aims to drastically reduce travel time and offer a premium alternative to existing rail and road options. The regular service is set to commence from Mumbai on November 2 and from Bengaluru on November 3, operating six days a week. This launch is part of a broader expansion of the Vande Bharat Sleeper network, which already includes routes like Howrah-Guwahati and Varanasi-New Delhi. The new service is expected to be a game-changer for business travellers, tourists, and families alike, providing a seamless and restful journey.
The Route and Timings
The train (No. 27652) will depart from SMVT Bengaluru at 7:45 PM and arrive at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai, at 11:55 AM the next day. In the return direction, the train (No. 27651) will leave CSMT Mumbai at 8:10 PM and reach SMVT Bengaluru at 12:00 PM the following day. The service will not operate on Mondays from Bengaluru and Tuesdays from Mumbai. The route passes through Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, with eight key stoppages: Anantapur, Guntakal, Raichur, Yadgir, Kalaburagi, Solapur, Pune, and Kalyan. This carefully planned route ensures connectivity for several important towns and cities along the corridor. The journey is expected to take approximately 16 hours, a significant saving compared to the 22 hours taken by some existing express trains on the same route.
Inside the Vande Bharat Sleeper
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is not just faster; it's a complete upgrade in passenger experience. The 16-coach trainset consists of First AC, AC 2nd Tier, and AC 3rd Tier classes, accommodating up to 823 passengers. The interiors are designed for overnight comfort, with ergonomically designed berths that are broader and better cushioned. Each berth features personal reading lights and multiple charging points, including standard sockets and USB ports. The coaches are soundproofed for a quieter journey and feature advanced air-conditioning with better temperature control. Safety is paramount, with the train equipped with the indigenous Kavach anti-collision system, CCTV cameras, fire detection alarms, and fire-retardant materials. Furthermore, the train has fully sealed gangways for easier and safer movement between coaches and bio-vacuum toilets with touch-free fittings to enhance hygiene.
