The 'Sweet Spot' for Longevity
A landmark study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has identified a potential 'sweet spot' for strength training and longevity. Researchers from institutions including Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed data from nearly
150,000 adults over three decades. They found that individuals who engaged in 90 to 120 minutes of resistance training per week had a significantly lower risk of death from any cause compared to those who did none. Specifically, this amount of training was associated with a 13% lower risk of all-cause mortality, a 19% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, and a 27% lower risk from neurological diseases. Interestingly, the study found no additional longevity benefits for those who trained more than 120 minutes per week, suggesting a point of diminishing returns.
What 'Moderate' Actually Means
The headline's call for 'caution on moderate training over extreme routines' is directly supported by these findings. The study defines the optimal range as just 1.5 to 2 hours a week. This doesn't require daily, gruelling gym sessions. Instead, it can be broken down into manageable workouts. For example, you could do two 45-to-60-minute sessions or three 30-to-40-minute sessions per week. This moderate approach includes activities like lifting free weights, using weight machines, or performing bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, squats, and lunges. The key takeaway is consistency over intensity. Building a routine that you can maintain over years is likely more beneficial than a punishing programme that leads to burnout.
The Risks of Going Too Far
While the study didn't focus on the dangers of 'extreme' routines, the concept of overtraining is a well-documented risk in fitness. Pushing your body too hard without adequate recovery can lead to Overtraining Syndrome. This condition can suppress your immune system, disrupt hormone balance, and negatively affect your mental health, causing irritability and poor sleep. Physically, it can lead to persistent fatigue, decreased performance, and an increased risk of injury. In severe cases, extreme muscle damage can cause a serious condition called rhabdomyolysis, where muscle fibres break down and release proteins that can damage the kidneys. The 30-year study’s findings reinforce that for long-term health, more is not always better. The goal is to stimulate the muscles, not annihilate them.
Strength Training Plus Cardio Is Best
It’s crucial to note that strength training is only one piece of the longevity puzzle. The study found that the greatest benefits were seen in individuals who combined their moderate resistance training with regular aerobic exercise. Participants who paired 60 to 119 minutes of strength training with higher levels of aerobic activity (like brisk walking, running, or cycling) had up to a 45% lower risk of dying during the study period than those who did neither. This synergy is powerful. Aerobic exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, while strength training builds and maintains muscle mass, which is vital for metabolic health, mobility, and preventing falls as we age. A balanced fitness plan that incorporates both disciplines appears to be the most effective strategy for a long and healthy life.
