The Reality of UPI Spending Controls
First, it's important to understand that most major UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm do not currently offer a direct, built-in feature to set a specific spending limit for a category like "food orders". The primary transaction limits on UPI are
set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and your bank, which typically cap daily spending at ₹1 lakh across a maximum of 20 transactions. These are designed more for security than for personal budgeting. However, this doesn't mean you're out of options. By using a combination of existing features and smart strategies, you can effectively create your own spending controls and curb those impulse purchases from food delivery apps.
Strategy 1: Use UPI Lite as a Digital 'Cash Envelope'
Perhaps the most effective method for controlling small, frequent expenses is by using UPI Lite. Think of it as a dedicated digital wallet for your discretionary spending. UPI Lite is an 'on-device wallet' that you can load with a specific amount of money from your main bank account. It has a maximum balance of ₹5,000 and a per-transaction limit of ₹1,000, and payments are processed instantly without needing a PIN. To control food spending, decide on a weekly or monthly budget for food orders. At the beginning of the period, load only that amount into your UPI Lite wallet. Then, make it a rule to only pay for Zomato, Swiggy, or other food services using your UPI Lite balance. Once the wallet is empty, your spending is automatically halted until you consciously decide to refill it. This creates a psychological barrier and prevents the seamless, unthinking spending that drains your main account.
How to Activate and Use UPI Lite
Activating UPI Lite is straightforward across most UPI apps that support it, like Paytm, PhonePe, and BHIM. Open your preferred UPI app and navigate to your profile or settings. Look for an option that says "UPI Lite" and select it to begin the activation process. You'll be prompted to choose the bank account you want to link and then add funds to your new Lite wallet. Once set up, you can simply use the same QR code scanning or 'Pay to mobile number' function you normally would. The app will automatically use your Lite balance for eligible low-value transactions, giving you a clear, separate pool of funds for your food budget.
Strategy 2: Set Lower Limits at the Bank Level
While you can't set limits within most UPI apps, some banks allow you to adjust your daily UPI transaction limit through their own mobile banking apps or net banking portals. Banks like HDFC, ICICI, and SBI have been noted to offer this functionality. By logging into your bank's platform and navigating to the UPI or funds transfer settings, you may find an option to lower your overall daily limit from the default ₹1 lakh to a much smaller amount. This is a more drastic measure as it affects all your UPI spending for the day, not just food orders. However, if impulse spending across the board is an issue, setting a personal daily cap of a few thousand rupees can be a powerful deterrent.
Strategy 3: Manage Your AutoPay Mandates
Many food or grocery services now offer subscriptions or memberships that use UPI AutoPay for recurring billing. These 'set-and-forget' payments can easily be forgotten, leading to continuous charges for services you may no longer use. Take a moment to audit your active mandates. In your UPI app, find the section labelled "AutoPay," "Mandates," or "My Subscriptions". Here, you will see a list of all recurring payments you have authorised. From this dashboard, you can view, pause, or permanently cancel any mandate directly from your app without needing to contact the merchant. Regularly cleaning up these mandates ensures you're only paying for what you actively use, freeing up more of your budget.
Strategy 4: The Secondary Bank Account Method
For those who want a clearer separation between essential and discretionary spending, consider linking a secondary bank account to your UPI apps. Maintain a low balance in this account, transferring just enough to cover your intended 'fun money' for the month, including food orders. When you link this as your primary account in UPI apps, you create a hard ceiling on your spending. Any transaction attempt beyond the available balance will simply fail. This method requires a little more setup but provides a nearly foolproof way to stick to a budget, as you can't spend money that simply isn't there.
