Divide and Conquer: Plan by Zone
The single biggest mistake is trying to see a North Kolkata pandal and a South Kolkata one on the same evening. The city is vast, and traffic during the Puja days is notoriously slow. The most effective strategy is to divide the city into zones and dedicate
a day or an evening to each. The primary zones are North Kolkata (known for traditional pujas and artistic masterpieces), South Kolkata (famous for grand themes and award-winning pandals), Central Kolkata (home to classics like College Square), and Salt Lake/Behala on the peripheries. Before you step out, pick a zone. For example, spend one evening exploring the cluster around Gariahat and Ballygunge in the south, and another dedicated to the historic lanes of Bagbazar and Kumartuli in the north. This approach minimises travel between distant points and maximises the number of pandals you can see within a specific area.
The Metro: Your Fastest Chariot
During Durga Puja, many roads near major pandals are closed to vehicles, making walking and the Metro the most reliable forms of transport. Kolkata's Metro is the backbone of any efficient pandal-hopping plan. It bypasses all street-level congestion and often runs on an extended schedule during the festival, sometimes until the early morning hours. In fact, Kolkata Metro often adds dozens of extra weekend services in the run-up to the Puja to manage the shopping rush. Plan your route by identifying the pandals closest to Metro stations. Key stations for South Kolkata include Kalighat, Jatin Das Park, and Rabindra Sarobar, which provide access to hotspots like Ekdalia Evergreen, Tridhara Sammilani, and Mudiali. In the North, the Girish Park and Sovabazar Sutanuti stations are your gateways to icons like Bagbazar Sarbojanin and Kumartuli Park.
Timing Is Everything: Beat the Crowds
The peak rush at most pandals is between 8 PM and midnight, especially on the key days of Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami. To truly appreciate the art without being jostled, you need to time your visits strategically. The quietest window is early in the morning, typically between 8 AM and 11 AM. Another surprisingly effective strategy is to go very late at night. After 1 AM, the crowds at many major pandals begin to thin out, but the illuminations and idols are still on full display. Some seasoned pandal-hoppers even start as early as 4 or 5 AM to get a peaceful view of the magnificent lighting. Many of the most famous pandals are inaugurated a few days before Shashthi, so starting your pandal-hopping early in the festival week is another great way to avoid the biggest crowds.
Pandal Clusters: The Power of Walking
Once the Metro gets you to a particular zone, walking is your best friend. Many of the most famous pandals are located surprisingly close to each other in clusters. For instance, in South Kolkata, you can start at Deshapriya Park and walk to nearby pujas like Tridhara Sammilani and Samaj Sebi Sangha. Similarly, the area around Rashbehari Avenue is dense with famous names like Singhi Park and Hindustan Park. In North Kolkata, the neighbourhood around Shyambazar and Girish Park allows you to walk between several historic and artistic pujas, including the iconic College Square and Mohammad Ali Park pandals. Wearing comfortable footwear is non-negotiable, as even with smart planning, you'll be covering a lot of ground on foot.
Explore Other Transport Options
While the Metro is king, don't overlook other transport modes for specific routes. Auto-rickshaws are great for covering short distances within a neighbourhood once you exit a Metro station. For a unique experience, consider the ferry service along the Hooghly river. Ghats like Bagbazar and Sovabazar provide access to North Kolkata's traditional pandals and offer a scenic, traffic-free journey. During the festival, special ferry services are often run to cater to the festive rush. Additionally, the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) sometimes operates special Puja Parikrama bus and even tram tours, which can be a relaxing, organised way to see a curated list of pandals without the stress of navigation.
