The Simplified Visa Process
One of the biggest hurdles for international travel from India is often the visa application. This is where Georgia stands out. For Indian passport holders, the country has created a system that is both clear and convenient, eliminating the need for long
waits and embassy visits for most tourists. There are two straightforward paths to entry. The most common is the Georgia e-Visa, which can be applied for entirely online through the official government portal. The process involves filling out a form, uploading necessary documents like your passport scan and photo, and paying a fee of around $20 plus processing charges. The visa typically allows for multiple entries and a stay of up to 30 days, and is usually processed within five to seven working days. The second, even simpler option, is for those who already hold a valid visa or residence permit from countries like the USA, UK, Schengen nations, or GCC countries. These travellers can enter Georgia visa-free for up to 90 days. It's important to note that there is no visa on arrival for Indians, so you must secure your e-Visa or confirm your visa-free eligibility before you fly.
Your Rupee Goes Further in Georgia
Beyond the easy entry, Georgia's main attraction for budget tourists is its incredible value for money. Compared to Western Europe, your travel budget stretches significantly further here, allowing for a rich experience without draining your savings. Flights from major Indian cities like Delhi often have direct connections, with round-trip fares available in the range of ₹35,000 to ₹45,000 if booked in advance. Accommodation is equally affordable. You can find clean and social hostels in central Tbilisi for as little as ₹800-₹1,500 per night, while private rooms in guesthouses or entire apartments on Airbnb can be found for ₹3,000-₹4,500. Food is another area where you'll save. Georgian cuisine is hearty, delicious, and cheap. Iconic dishes like Khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) and Khinkali (meat or vegetable dumplings) are filling meals that cost only a few hundred rupees. A satisfying meal at a local restaurant is very manageable, and a daily food budget of ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 is realistic for most travellers.
More Than Just a Budget Destination
While the low cost is a major draw, Georgia is a world-class destination in its own right, packed with diverse landscapes and deep history. Your journey will likely start in the capital, Tbilisi, a city of charming contrasts. Spend your days exploring the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, taking a cable car up to the ancient Narikala Fortress for panoramic views, and relaxing in the historic sulphur baths. But the magic of Georgia extends far beyond its capital. A non-negotiable trip for most visitors is the drive along the stunning Georgian Military Highway into the Caucasus Mountains. The destination is the town of Stepantsminda (also known as Kazbegi), where the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church is set against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kazbek. For wine lovers, a visit to the Kakheti region is essential. As the birthplace of wine, Georgia has an 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition, and you can tour vineyards and taste unique wines often made in traditional clay vessels called qvevri. Other popular excursions include the ancient capital of Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage site just a short drive from Tbilisi, and the vibrant Black Sea coastal city of Batumi.
Practical Tips for Indian Travellers
To make your trip smooth, keep a few things in mind. The local currency is the Georgian Lari (GEL). While cards are widely accepted in cities, it's wise to carry cash for smaller shops and markets. Since January 2026, carrying valid travel and health insurance has become mandatory for all tourists entering the country. Ride-sharing apps like Bolt are readily available in Tbilisi and are a very affordable way to get around. For longer distances between cities, look for shared taxis called 'marshrutkas', which are a cost-effective mode of transport. The people are known for their hospitality, and while English may not be widespread in rural areas, a friendly attitude goes a long way. The country is also considered very safe for tourists, including solo female travellers. A typical 6-7 day trip from India, including flights, accommodation, food, and activities, can comfortably be managed within a budget of ₹70,000 to ₹1,10,000 per person.
