Understanding the Route and the Main Attraction
The Mandovi Express, running between Mumbai and Madgaon in Goa, is one of the most iconic journeys on the Konkan Railway. While the entire route is dotted with countless seasonal streams and waterfalls during the monsoon, the main event for many travellers
is the mighty Dudhsagar Falls. It's important to know that Dudhsagar, meaning 'Sea of Milk', is not directly on the main Mandovi Express line but on a connecting route on the South Western Railway line between Kulem and Castle Rock. To see it, you'll need to take a separate train from Madgaon. This journey through the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary is where the magic truly happens.
The Best Time To Travel
There is no debate here: the monsoon season is the ultimate time for this journey. From June to early October, the Western Ghats are at their most vibrant. The landscape is a brilliant, almost blinding green, and the waterfalls are in their full, furious flow. While pleasant, the winter months simply do not offer the same dramatic, water-filled spectacle. Be aware that Konkan Railway operates a special monsoon timetable from June to October for safety, which can involve slower speeds, but this only gives you more time to soak in the views.
Booking the Right Train and Seat
For the main journey to Goa, the Mandovi Express is a fantastic day-time choice. However, for the specific Dudhsagar Falls view, you’ll need to book a ticket on a train travelling between Madgaon (or Vasco da Gama) and the Londa junction. Trains like the Amaravati Express or the Vasco-Yesvantpur Express are great options. During the monsoon, jeep safaris and trekking on the tracks are forbidden for safety reasons, making the train the only legal way to see the falls. To get the best view of the falls when travelling from Kulem (Goa) towards Castle Rock (Karnataka), you need to be on the right side of the train. The train curves on a viaduct, giving passengers on this side a breathtaking, cinematic view of the entire cascade.
Mastering the Onboard Experience
The Mandovi Express is colloquially known as the 'Food Queen of Konkan Railways' for a reason, so be sure to sample the onboard catering. For the best views and photos, especially in non-AC coaches, a window seat is a must. If you don't get one, the open doors of the coaches become informal viewing galleries. Be prepared for them to be crowded, especially as the train approaches key scenic points. Stand your ground politely and have your camera ready. A little spray from the waterfalls is part of the experience!
What to Pack for Your Journey
Pack light, but smart. A raincoat or umbrella is essential, even for just moving between platforms. Keep a dry bag or a simple plastic bag for your electronics like cameras and phones, as the misty spray near waterfalls can be pervasive. Pack some snacks and water, although most long-distance trains have catering. If you're a keen photographer, a lens cloth is non-negotiable to constantly wipe the moisture from your lens. Finally, wear footwear with a good grip, as train floors and station platforms can become slippery.
Beyond the Big Waterfall
While Dudhsagar is the star, don't fixate on it exclusively. The entire Konkan route is an engineering marvel with over 2,000 bridges and 91 tunnels.
