Konkan Railway: Mumbai to Goa
Often called India’s most cinematic monsoon route, the Konkan Railway journey is an engineering marvel that comes alive in the rains. Spanning over 2,000 bridges and passing through 92 tunnels, the train hugs the Western Ghats, offering surreal views
of waterfalls cascading just metres from the tracks. The stretch between Ratnagiri and Karmali is particularly dramatic, with clouds hanging at window level and lush valleys unfolding below. For the best views of the waterfalls and coastline, try to secure a seat on the left side of the train when travelling from Mumbai.
Kalka-Shimla Railway: Himalayan Queen
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this narrow-gauge toy train offers a fairy-tale journey through the Himalayan foothills. The five-hour trip from Kalka to Shimla winds through over 100 tunnels, crosses more than 800 bridges, and navigates 900 curves. During the monsoon, the pine forests are shrouded in mist, valleys come alive with wildflowers, and countless streams cascade down the hillsides, creating a moody and atmospheric ride. While services can sometimes be delayed due to heavy rains, the experience of travelling through the clouds makes it unforgettable.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway: Mettupalayam to Ooty
Another UNESCO-listed gem, this toy train is one of the world's last remaining rack-and-pinion railways. The journey from the plains of Mettupalayam to the hill station of Ooty is a steep climb through the rain-washed Nilgiri Hills. During the monsoon, the tea gardens turn a vivid shade of green, mist clings to the forested slopes, and hidden waterfalls appear around the bends. The vintage steam locomotive chugging through the clouds adds a nostalgic charm to this scenic journey in South India.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling
Affectionately known as the 'Toy Train', this route is famous for its breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas. The train slowly ascends from the plains, passing through vibrant tea gardens that look exceptionally fresh during the monsoon. The journey is filled with charming, old-world stations and the famous Batasia Loop, which offers a panoramic view of Darjeeling town against a backdrop of mist-covered peaks. The slow pace of the train allows you to fully immerse yourself in the magical, rain-soaked atmosphere.
Matheran Hill Railway: Neral to Matheran
This delightful toy train is the only heritage railway in Maharashtra and provides a peaceful escape from city life. The short, 20-kilometre journey from Neral to the eco-sensitive hill station of Matheran takes you through dense, misty forests and around sharp, dramatic curves in the Sahyadri range. With no vehicles allowed in Matheran, the slow, romantic train ride is the perfect introduction to its tranquil environment. During the monsoon, the entire landscape is veiled in clouds and dotted with waterfalls.
The Dudhsagar Falls Route: Londa to Goa
While part of the broader Konkan network, the specific journey towards Goa that passes the magnificent Dudhsagar Falls deserves its own mention. This route through the Western Ghats is at its most spectacular during the monsoon. The main attraction is the mighty Dudhsagar, one of India's tallest waterfalls, which plunges dramatically right next to the railway tracks. The sight of the 'Sea of Milk' in its full, thunderous glory is a highlight that makes this one of India's most sought-after monsoon train experiences.
The Sea Bridge Journey: Mandapam to Rameswaram
For a different kind of monsoon spectacle, the journey from Mandapam to Rameswaram Island offers a thrilling coastal experience. The highlight is crossing the historic Pamban Bridge, which runs for over two kilometres across the sea. During the monsoon, the winds and dramatic grey skies create a powerful backdrop. As the train glides over the water, you are treated to stunning views of the choppy sea on one side and calmer bay waters on the other, with fishing boats dotting the horizon. It's a short but unforgettable ride that combines engineering prowess with raw natural beauty.
