The Science of a Damp Room
During the monsoon, the air outside is already saturated with moisture, with humidity levels in Indian cities often crossing 80%. When you hang wet clothes inside, the water from the fabric has to go somewhere. It evaporates into the air of the room.
A single load of laundry can release up to two litres of water, pushing indoor humidity from a healthy 50% to over 75%. This excess moisture has nowhere to escape, especially in poorly ventilated apartments, turning your living space into a humid, subtropical zone. This process creates condensation on walls and windows, which is a clear sign that the moisture level in your home is too high.
The Hidden Health Hazards
This spike in indoor humidity is not just about a sticky, uncomfortable feeling. It creates the perfect breeding ground for microscopic threats that can impact your respiratory health. Mould and mildew thrive in damp conditions, growing on walls, behind furniture, and even in your closets. These fungi release spores into the air which, when inhaled, can trigger allergies, coughing, wheezing, and can worsen conditions like asthma. Furthermore, dust mites, another major allergen, also multiply rapidly in humid environments. Clothes that take too long to dry can also develop bacteria, leading to that stubborn musty smell and potential skin irritations like eczema or ringworm.
Smart Drying Strategies
Fighting back against monsoon dampness starts at the washing machine. Before hanging your clothes, run an extra spin cycle at the highest speed your fabric can handle. This can remove a significant amount of excess water before the clothes even reach the drying rack. When you do hang them, space is critical. Avoid overcrowding the rack; each garment needs its own air space to dry efficiently. Shaking each item out before hanging it can also speed up the process. For items that are nearly dry, a quick press with a hot iron can remove the last bit of dampness, especially in thick seams, and also helps kill any lingering bacteria.
Ventilation Is Your Best Friend
The single most important factor in drying clothes indoors is airflow. Trapping wet laundry in a closed room is a recipe for mould. Designate one room for drying and improve its ventilation. Place a fan—whether a pedestal or ceiling fan—to blow air across the clothes, not directly at them. This constant movement of air helps whisk away the moisture-laden air surrounding the clothes, drastically cutting drying time. Even during the rains, try to crack open a window for 15-20 minutes to allow the humid indoor air to escape and fresh, drier air to enter. Using an exhaust fan in a bathroom or kitchen where clothes are drying can also be very effective.
Consider a Dehumidifier
For homes that struggle with persistent dampness, or for families with large laundry loads, a dehumidifier can be a game-changer. Unlike a fan that just circulates air, a dehumidifier actively pulls moisture out of the atmosphere and collects it as water in a tank. Placing a dehumidifier in the room with your drying laundry can reduce drying times from over 12 hours down to just 4-6 hours. This rapid drying prevents the growth of mould and bacteria, keeping your clothes and your air fresh. While it is an investment, it’s one of the most effective solutions for managing high indoor humidity, especially in coastal cities where the monsoon is particularly intense.
