What is the New Visa Initiative?
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has introduced a pilot programme that offers a complimentary UAE entry visa to Indian tourists. This isn't a visa-free travel policy for all, but rather a targeted incentive where the visa cost
is covered by DCT Abu Dhabi for those who qualify. The initiative aims to make the emirate a more attractive and accessible destination for the Indian market, which is already one of Abu Dhabi's most important sources of international visitors. The scheme will initially support up to 20,000 visas. The value of this waiver is approximately AED 285 per person, providing a significant saving, especially for families and group travellers.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
To qualify for the complimentary visa, travellers must meet a specific set of criteria. The offer is available to Indian passport holders who are departing from India. The key condition is that the trip must be booked as a package through a participating travel partner or online travel agency. This package must include a return flight from India and a stay of at least three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. Bookings for only a flight or only a hotel will not be eligible for the free visa offer. It's crucial to note that travellers cannot apply for this waiver independently; it must be processed as part of the qualifying holiday package booking.
What is the Travel Period?
This is a limited-time pilot programme. The offer is valid for travel that takes place between August 1, 2026, and October 31, 2026. This three-month window refers to the actual dates of travel, not the booking period. Therefore, your entire trip must be completed by the end of October to be eligible. Simply booking a trip before the deadline for a later travel date will not qualify you for the complimentary visa. Given that the programme has a cap of 20,000 visas, travellers interested in taking advantage of the offer are advised to plan and book their holidays in advance.
Which Travel Partners are Participating?
The complimentary visa is only available when booking through designated partners. Travellers cannot claim the benefit by booking directly with airlines or hotels. A list of 11 participating travel partners has been announced, giving Indian tourists several options to choose from. These partners include major names in the Indian travel industry such as MakeMyTrip, Thomas Cook and SOTC, Akbar Holidays, and PickYourTrail. Other partners are Holiday Tribe, Thrillophilia, Utazzo.com, Kesari Tours, Riya Travels, Royal Tours, and Aaryan Leisure. These agents will handle the visa application process, either working with a destination management company (DMC) appointed by DCT Abu Dhabi or getting a reimbursement for the visa cost through their existing partners.
How Does This Compare to Other Visa Options?
Normally, Indian passport holders must apply for a UAE visa before travelling, as they are generally not eligible for visa-on-arrival. The standard process involves submitting documents like a valid passport, photos, and confirmed return tickets through an airline or a travel agent. There are exceptions for Indian passport holders who also hold valid visas or residency from the US, UK, or EU, who may be eligible for a visa on arrival for a fee. This new initiative stands out because it completely removes the visa cost for a 30-day tourist visa, provided the booking conditions are met. It simplifies budgeting and reduces the upfront cost of the trip, making it a highly attractive option for the specific travel window.
