The numbers from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) are stark. Throughout July 2026, the city's main observatory recorded just 23 mm of rainfall. For context, Bengaluru typically receives between 110 mm and 160 mm of rain during this peak monsoon
month. This makes it the driest July since 1918, when a mere 18.5 mm was recorded. The dramatic drop came after a promising season start, with healthy pre-monsoon showers providing a surplus. However, the failure of July rains brought the cumulative monsoon total to only 94 mm, well below what's needed to replenish the city’s water resources. The prolonged dry spell effectively put a brake on the southwest monsoon's performance over the region.
The Meteorological Culprits
So, what turned off the tap? Experts point to a combination of large-scale and local factors. A primary cause was a weakened monsoon trough, the massive low-pressure system that stretches across the country and is the main driver of monsoon rains. This weakness was compounded by the influence of a developing El Niño, a climatic pattern in the Pacific Ocean known to suppress monsoon rainfall over India. An offshore trough that typically brings rain to the west coast, including Karnataka, was also less active. While a brief spell of rain at the end of the month was triggered by this trough, IMD scientists noted it was a short-lived event and that monsoon activity was likely to remain weak for much of August.
The Ripple Effect on Water Supply
For Bengaluru, rainfall in the city is only one part of the equation. The more critical factor is the rainfall in the catchment areas of the Cauvery River, which provides over 80% of the city's piped water. This water is pumped over 100 km to reach the city. A weak monsoon across the wider South Interior Karnataka region means lower inflows into the vital Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) and Kabini reservoirs. While officials from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) have stated there is no immediate shortage of drinking water, they are monitoring the situation closely. The city requires an average of 2 to 2.3 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water per month, and any prolonged deficit puts this supply under immense pressure, reviving memories of past water crises.
Beyond the Tap: Wider Consequences
The impact of a dry July extends far beyond just drinking water concerns. A significant portion of Bengaluru's population, especially in newer developments and peripheral areas, depends heavily on groundwater via borewells and private tankers. A lack of rain fails to recharge these aquifers, leading to depleting groundwater levels and increasing reliance on expensive, unregulated tankers. This disproportionately affects lower-income households. Furthermore, the agricultural belts surrounding Bengaluru, which supply the city with fresh produce, are heavily reliant on monsoon rains. A deficit can lead to crop distress, impacting yields and potentially leading to higher food prices in the city's markets. The soil also loses moisture, which can affect local temperatures and greenery.
What Happens Next?
Despite the severe deficit in July, all is not lost. The most crucial rainfall months for Bengaluru are typically August and September. Thanks to the strong pre-monsoon showers, the city's overall annual rainfall is still within a normal range. Meteorologists are hopeful that a revival of the monsoon in the coming weeks could help close the gap. Forecasts suggest a potential revival of rainfall between August 6 and 12, though it may weaken again after. However, this dry spell serves as a stark reminder of Bengaluru's precarious water situation. The city's rapid urbanisation has covered ancient drainage channels and lakes that once helped recharge groundwater. This makes effective water management and conservation more critical than ever.
