Regions on High Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for a wide swathe of North India, with active monsoon conditions expected to persist. States including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, along with the Delhi-NCR
region, are on watch for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Uttarakhand, in particular, is under a high alert, with forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall in some areas, prompting warnings for landslides and flash floods. For Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12, the IMD predicted continued intense spells, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across these regions. Heavy rainfall is expected in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi through July 13, while Himachal Pradesh's warning extends to July 15.
The Peril in the Hills
The situation is particularly precarious in the hilly states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Authorities have warned that the persistent rain significantly increases the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and flash floods. On Saturday, heavy rains had already triggered landslides in both states, blocking numerous roads, including national highways. In Himachal Pradesh, a landslide was reported in Shimla, and a bridge collapsed in Sangla, while rising stream levels threatened homes in Kinnaur district. In Uttarakhand, around 120 roads were blocked due to landslides. Authorities have strongly advised travelers, including those on the Char Dham Yatra, to exercise extreme caution, check road statuses, and consider postponing trips until the weather stabilises.
Urban Chaos: Waterlogging and Traffic Jams
In the plains, the heavy downpour has translated into civic challenges, primarily waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions. Cities like Delhi, Gurugram, and Noida have reported waterlogged streets and underpasses, leading to long traffic snarls. The IMD has specifically warned that heavy rainfall may lead to continued waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt traffic. Commuters in Delhi-NCR have been advised to stay informed about local traffic updates to avoid getting stuck. The intense rain has slowed down local metro and train services in some areas as a safety precaution.
Forecast and Official Advisories
The active monsoon spell is attributed to a combination of weather systems, including a persistent monsoon trough and a western disturbance. While rainfall intensity in Delhi was expected to decrease slightly after the weekend, widespread showers are forecast to continue in Uttarakhand until July 17 and in Himachal Pradesh until July 15. State Emergency Operations Centres have directed district administrations to remain on high alert. The public is advised to stay away from overflowing rivers and streams, avoid travel to landslide-prone areas, and ensure they have emergency supplies, including charged phones and power banks.
How to Stay Safe
During this period of intense rainfall, prioritizing safety is crucial. Avoid driving through waterlogged streets, as the depth can be deceptive and lead to vehicle breakdowns. Do not walk near open drains or overflowing water bodies. For those in hilly areas, be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to move to a safer location if you are in a landslide-prone zone. Keep track of official weather updates from the IMD and advisories from local disaster management authorities rather than relying on unverified social media forwards. For those planning to travel, check the latest road and traffic conditions before starting your journey and have alternative routes in mind.
