A pressure cooker works by trapping steam inside a sealed pot. As the liquid inside heats up, it creates steam, and with nowhere to go, this steam builds pressure. This increased pressure raises the boiling point of water, allowing food to cook at a much
higher temperature and therefore much faster. The entire system relies on a small but crucial component: the vent path. This includes the main pressure valve (often a weight or a switch) and sometimes a secondary float valve. These are designed to release excess steam in a controlled manner, keeping the pressure inside at a safe, effective level. If this path becomes blocked, the consequences can be severe. Uncontrolled pressure buildup can lead to the cooker malfunctioning, forcefully expelling hot steam and food, or in the worst-case scenario, the lid failing catastrophically.
The Starchy Food Problem
Certain foods pose a greater risk than others when it comes to blocking these vital vents. Thick and starchy items are the primary culprits. Foods like dal, split peas, rice, oatmeal, pasta, and even applesauce tend to foam, froth, and sputter as they cook. This foam can rise up and carry small food particles with it, which can then get lodged in the narrow vent pipe or valve assembly. As the food cooks, this starchy residue can harden, creating a plug that is almost like cement. This blockage prevents the cooker from releasing steam properly, turning a convenient kitchen tool into a potential hazard. Manufacturers specifically warn against cooking these types of foods without taking precautions. It's also critical not to overfill the cooker; a good rule is to never fill it more than halfway with starchy ingredients like beans and rice to allow room for expansion and foaming.

Making a vent check part of your routine takes only a few seconds but is the most important step you can take. Before you lock the lid for every single cook, follow this simple procedure. First, remove the lid and hold it up to a light source. Look through the vent pipe from the inside of the lid to ensure you can see daylight. This confirms the main pathway is clear. Next, inspect the pressure release valve and the float valve (the small metal pin that pops up). Make sure they are clean and move freely. On many modern electric pressure cookers, these parts are removable for easy cleaning. Check the anti-block shield—a small metal cap on the inside of the lid over the vent—and ensure it's free of any food debris. Finally, inspect the silicone or rubber sealing ring for any cracks, tears, or damage. A faulty gasket can also lead to improper sealing and dangerous malfunctions.
Proper Cleaning and Maintenance
Good safety practices continue after the meal is cooked. Proper cleaning is not just about hygiene; it’s about preventing future blockages. After each use, especially after cooking starchy foods, disassemble the lid's components according to your manufacturer's instructions. The sealing ring, anti-block shield, and pressure release valve should be removed and washed thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Use a small brush to clean the vent pipe and valve assembly, ensuring no hidden food particles remain. Let all parts dry completely before reassembling the lid. The silicone sealing ring can absorb odours over time, so some users keep separate rings for savoury and sweet dishes.
