Current Weather Outlook and Official Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts. As of early July 2026, the monsoon is fully active, with forecasts predicting widespread rain to continue. On Tuesday, July 7th, the IMD specifically
warned of heavy rainfall in Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Shimla districts, with yellow and orange alerts active across the state until July 12. These conditions significantly increase the risk of landslides, flash floods, and poor visibility on roads. Authorities are urging tourists and residents to remain vigilant, stay away from rivers and landslide-prone zones, and follow official weather bulletins closely.
Major Road and Highway Status
Heavy rains have already caused disruptions on major routes. In early July, flash floods and landslides led to temporary closures on National Highway-5 (Hindustan-Tibet Road) in Kinnaur, trapping vehicles before being cleared. A Reddit travel update on July 8th noted that the Kalka-Shimla Highway (NH-5) was experiencing bottlenecks due to a landslide near Solan. The Mandi-Kullu-Manali highway is also highly vulnerable to flash floods. While authorities are working to restore connectivity, with reports of nearly 49 roads being closed at one point, the situation remains dynamic. Travellers must verify the status of their intended route on the day of travel, as conditions can change rapidly. The Manali-Leh highway was reportedly passable but strictly regulated due to aggressive water crossings in the afternoon.
Government Preparedness and Resources
The Himachal Pradesh government has stepped up its preparedness to tackle monsoon-related emergencies. Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh confirmed the deployment of around 15,500 workers and over 1,150 machines to restore road connectivity. Bailey bridges and other essential materials have been strategically positioned for emergencies. For real-time help, the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) has activated 24x7 helplines. The state-level helpline number is 1070, and district-level helplines can be reached at 1077. These numbers can be used to report emergencies like road blockages, landslides, or to seek assistance. Officials are urging travellers to follow traffic advisories and use these resources.
Essential Safety Checklist for Travelers
Given the volatile conditions, anyone planning to drive in Himachal should prioritize safety. The HPSDMA and local police have issued advisories with key precautions. First, always check the latest weather forecast and road status from official sources before starting your journey. Avoid travelling at night when visibility is low and risks are higher. The Himachal Police have also warned against parking vehicles near weak or old trees, especially during rain and strong winds, as falling trees have been reported. It is advisable to park only in designated safe areas. Prepare an emergency kit for your vehicle that includes a first-aid box, drinking water, and basic tools. Downloading offline maps is also recommended, as mobile connectivity can be unreliable in remote or disaster-affected areas. Finally, maintain flexibility in your travel plans and be prepared to postpone or alter your trip if conditions are deemed unsafe by authorities.
