A Modern Suit for a New Era
When NASA astronauts return to the Moon, they will be wearing the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU. Developed by commercial space company Axiom Space, these next-generation suits are designed to solve the mobility challenges that defined the Apollo
era. Building on NASA's own research, Axiom has been tasked with creating a suit that provides not just life support, but the flexibility needed for complex scientific work on the lunar surface. The partnership represents a key part of NASA's modern strategy: leveraging commercial innovation to achieve its ambitious exploration goals and foster a growing space economy. The suits are being designed to support spacewalks for up to eight hours, a critical capability for future missions.
Designed for Unprecedented Movement
The key upgrade in the AxEMU is its superior mobility. The stiff, cumbersome nature of the Apollo suits has been replaced with a design that incorporates a system of advanced soft and hard joints and a novel bearing system. This will allow astronauts to walk more naturally, bend, kneel, and even squat to pick up geological samples—actions that were nearly impossible for their predecessors. The goal is to allow astronauts to perform their scientific duties without having to fight against their own suit. This increased range of motion is crucial for exploring the rugged terrain of the Moon's South Pole, the target for the Artemis III mission, which features permanently shadowed craters and challenging landscapes.
Leaving the 'Bunny Hop' Behind
The 'bunny hop' gait of the Apollo astronauts was a direct result of their pressurized, rigid suits, which made bending their knees and hips extremely difficult. The AxEMU design directly addresses this legacy issue. Another significant change is the rear-entry hatch, which allows an astronaut to climb into the suit from the back. This design is not only easier to get into but also reduces the risk of shoulder injuries common with older suit designs that required assembling a top and bottom half. Furthermore, the new suits are highly adjustable and designed to accommodate a much wider range of body types for both male and female astronauts, a significant improvement over previous custom-fit models.
More Than Just a Walk in the Park
The ability to move with greater ease is about more than just comfort; it's about expanding the scope of what humans can achieve on another world. The Artemis missions are focused on establishing a long-term, sustainable presence on the Moon for scientific discovery. The enhanced mobility of the AxEMU suits will enable astronauts to perform more precise geological tasks, set up complex experiments, and explore more challenging terrain. The helmet is equipped with an integrated high-definition camera and lights, essential for navigating the dark, permanently shadowed regions of the lunar south pole. These features will not only aid the astronauts but also stream invaluable point-of-view footage back to scientists on Earth.
The Path to the Lunar Surface
Before the AxEMU suits are cleared for a lunar mission, they are undergoing extensive testing. Axiom Space has conducted hundreds of hours of crewed pressurized tests, including simulations in underwater environments like NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory to mimic lunar gravity. The design recently passed a major contractor-led technical review, and NASA will conduct its own evaluation to ensure the hardware is on track for the Artemis III mission. While the prototype suit was revealed with a dark gray cover layer, the final version worn on the Moon will be white to reflect heat and keep the astronauts cool in the harsh lunar environment. These suits are a critical piece of the complex architecture, alongside the rocket, crew capsule, and lander, that will enable humanity's next giant leap.
