Prioritise Hydration
Before you even think about food, focus on water. Proper hydration is fundamental to good digestion, helping to flush waste and reduce bloating. In the days leading up to your celebrations, aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water. You can also supplement
with other nourishing fluids. Coconut water is excellent for replenishing electrolytes, while herbal teas like ginger, peppermint, or chamomile can soothe the digestive tract. Starting your day with a glass of warm water, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon, can also help stimulate digestion and set a healthy tone for the day.
Embrace Light, Cooked Meals
Give your digestive system a break from heavy, complex foods. Instead of rich curries and fried snacks, opt for meals that are easy to process. Khichdi, made from moong dal and rice, is a classic Indian comfort food known for being incredibly gentle on the stomach. Similarly, vegetable daliya (broken wheat porridge) is a high-fibre option that supports gut health without causing heaviness. Other great choices include steamed idlis, which are fermented and easy to digest, and soft upma cooked with minimal oil.
Fill Up on Fibre and Greens
Fibre is crucial for keeping your digestive system regular. Focus on easily digestible, fibre-rich vegetables like lauki (bottle gourd), carrots, and beetroot. Leafy greens such as spinach and methi are also beneficial; when cooked into a simple dal, they become easier to digest while providing essential nutrients that support bowel function. Fresh, seasonal fruits are another great source of fibre and vitamins. Papaya, for instance, contains the enzyme papain, which aids in digestion, while bananas are rich in potassium and can help reduce bloating.
Incorporate Probiotic Power
A healthy gut microbiome is key to efficient digestion. Probiotics, the beneficial bacteria found in fermented foods, help maintain this balance. Curd (dahi) and buttermilk (chaas) are two of the most accessible and effective probiotic sources in the Indian diet. A glass of spiced chaas after a meal can significantly aid digestion and cool the system. Plain yogurt is another excellent choice that supports gut bacteria and can help reduce gas production. Including these foods in your pre-festival diet helps fortify your gut for the richer foods to come.
Lean on Digestive Spices
Certain spices have been used for centuries to support digestion. Ginger is well-known for its ability to soothe the stomach and help it empty faster. Fennel seeds (saunf), often chewed after meals, can help relax intestinal muscles and relieve gas. Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with anti-inflammatory properties that can ease digestive discomfort. Ajwain (carom seeds) is another powerful digestive aid. Incorporating these spices into your light meals, or drinking them as teas, can provide an extra layer of digestive support.
What to Limit Temporarily
A pre-festival reset is as much about what you reduce as what you add. In the few days before the festivities begin, try to limit processed foods, excessive sugar, deep-fried items, and very heavy, spicy meals. These foods can put a strain on your digestive system, leading to feelings of sluggishness and bloating. By temporarily scaling back, you give your body a chance to rest and reset, ensuring you feel light, energetic, and ready to celebrate wholeheartedly when the time comes.
