The Vistadome Experience Arrives
Indian Railways' popular Vistadome coaches, known for their glass roofs and panoramic windows, are making their debut in Tamil Nadu. Southern Railway is attaching one Executive AC Vistadome coach to the Madurai–Guruvayur Express (16327/16328) on a trial
basis. This move is set to transform the train journey between the two major temple towns into a scenic spectacle, especially for tourists and leisure travellers. The first run with this new coach is scheduled for today, October 22, 2026, marking a significant milestone for rail tourism in the region. Unlike dedicated tourist trains, this coach will be part of a regular express service, making the experience more accessible.
What is a Vistadome Coach?
For the uninitiated, a Vistadome coach is a specially designed railway car built for sightseeing. Its primary features include massive glass windows that stretch down the sides, and a transparent glass roof that offers a sky view. The seats are a major highlight; they can rotate 180 degrees, allowing passengers to always face the direction of the best scenery. These coaches also come with modern amenities like an observation lounge for a wider viewing perspective, Wi-Fi-based passenger information systems, and automatic sliding doors. The goal is to provide an immersive travel experience, making the journey itself as much of a destination as the endpoint.
The Scenic Route and Schedule
The chosen route for this trial is what makes it truly special. The coach will traverse the picturesque landscape between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, offering breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. A key highlight is the scenic ghat section between Sengottai and Kollam Junction, including the Aryankavu pass, known for its lush greenery and natural beauty. According to the trial schedule, the Vistadome coach will be attached to Train No. 16327 from Madurai to Guruvayur on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. On the return journey, it will be on Train No. 16328 from Guruvayur to Madurai on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. This temporary run is scheduled from October 22, 2026, until mid-January 2027.
Booking, Fares, and What to Expect
This is a trial run, but it is open to the public. Bookings are now open for the Vistadome coach, which is classified as an 'Executive AC Chair Car' (Class Code: EV). Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC portal. The fare structure is similar to that of an executive class ticket. While a full end-to-end journey could cost around ₹1875, shorter trips will have lower fares, with some basic fares starting from ₹515. Passengers can expect a premium experience that combines the comfort of an AC chair car with unparalleled views, designed to elevate the journey from mere transport to a memorable sightseeing tour.
A Boost for Regional Tourism
The introduction of the Vistadome coach is expected to be a significant driver for tourism in the region. It connects Madurai, a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage and the Meenakshi Amman Temple, with Guruvayur, a major pilgrimage site in Kerala. This new service offers a comfortable and visually stunning travel option for pilgrims, tourists, and families alike. By showcasing the natural beauty of the Western Ghats, railway officials hope to attract more visitors to the area, potentially boosting local economies. Rail user groups have hailed the move as a major milestone for tourism between the two states, expressing hope that nominal fares will encourage widespread adoption.
