Meet Dewi: A Digital Ambassador
On October 13, 2026, the Indian Embassy in Jakarta launched its AI-powered avatar, Dewi, to serve as a new digital point of contact. The name 'Dewi' was chosen for its deep cultural connection to both India and Indonesia. It derives from the Sanskrit
word 'Devi', meaning goddess, and is a common name in Indonesia, symbolising the shared cultural heritage between the two nations. The launch was intentionally timed to coincide with the auspicious start of Navaratri and Durga Puja, adding a festive and culturally significant layer to the initiative. Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, introduced Dewi as a guide for followers, marking a new era of digital communication for the embassy.
What Information Will Dewi Provide?
Dewi is designed to be a comprehensive source of information, making it easier for both the Indian diaspora and Indonesian citizens to connect with India. The avatar will provide regular updates across a wide range of topics. These include details on Indian culture and heritage, tourism opportunities, and information on scholarships for studying in India. Furthermore, Dewi will be a resource for those interested in business and investment prospects in India. Crucially, the AI will also deliver important consular service updates, assisting the approximately 130,000 Persons of Indian Origin and 15,000 Non-Resident Indians living in Indonesia.
A Strategic Step in Digital Diplomacy
The Dewi project is more than just a technological novelty; it represents a strategic move in India's approach to foreign policy and public engagement. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for using artificial intelligence to improve governance and public service delivery. By adopting tools like AI avatars, the Ministry of External Affairs is moving beyond conventional communication methods to create more accessible and engaging outreach. The project aims to strengthen the India-Indonesia partnership, a key component of India's 'Act East' policy. Dewi is expected to bring stories and updates from this bilateral relationship closer to a wider online audience.
The Broader Trend of AI in Governance
The launch of Dewi is part of a growing trend of Indian diplomatic missions leveraging AI for public services. In August 2026, for example, the Consulate General of India in Munich introduced 'Sarathi', another AI avatar tasked with providing information on consular matters like passports and visas. These initiatives reflect a broader national strategy, exemplified by projects like BHASHINI, which uses AI to break down language barriers in digital content. As AI technology becomes more sophisticated, its role in diplomacy and public administration is expected to expand, helping to manage communications, disseminate information efficiently, and foster international connections. This reflects a global shift where technology is increasingly seen as an instrument of soft power and international influence.
