Why Voter Lists Are Revised
The Election Commission of India (ECI) regularly updates electoral rolls to maintain an accurate and clean list of voters. This process, known as revision, is essential for a healthy democracy. Revisions remove names of deceased persons, individuals who
have permanently moved, or duplicate entries. At the same time, they add newly eligible citizens who have turned 18. The headline's reference to '17 revising regions' points to a recent Special Summary Revision (SSR) ordered by the ECI across several states and Union Territories, highlighting the dynamic nature of these lists. A simple clerical error or an unrecorded change of address could lead to your name being missing on polling day, which is why proactive verification is vital.
Method 1: The Voters' Services Portal
The most direct way to check your details is through the official ECI Voters' Services Portal (voters.eci.gov.in). This platform is a one-stop solution for all voter-related services. First, navigate to the website and select 'Search in Electoral Roll'. The portal gives you three primary ways to search. The easiest is 'Search by EPIC', where you enter your 10-digit Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number, select your state, and fill in a captcha code. Alternatively, you can use 'Search by Details', providing your name, father/husband's name, age, and location. A third option allows searching by your registered mobile number. If your name is on the active roll, your details will be displayed.
Method 2: The Voter Helpline App
For those who prefer using a smartphone, the ECI's 'Voter Helpline' app is an excellent tool. Available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the app provides a comprehensive suite of services. After downloading and installing, you will need to register with your mobile number. Once logged in, the main dashboard offers an option to 'Search your name in Electoral Roll'. Similar to the web portal, you can search using your EPIC number, personal details, or by scanning the QR code on your voter slip. The app not only allows you to verify your status but also to submit forms, track applications, and even download a digital version of your voter slip.
Method 3: Offline Verification
If you are unable to access the online services or prefer a face-to-face interaction, you can verify your details offline. Every polling area is assigned a Booth Level Officer (BLO), who is the ECI's local representative. You can find your BLO's contact details on the electoral search portal. The BLO maintains the electoral roll for your specific polling booth and can confirm your inclusion in the list. You can also visit the office of your Electoral Registration Officer (ERO), typically located at the tehsil or sub-division office, to inspect the latest voter list. This is a reliable way to ensure your details are present and correct, especially during revision periods when draft rolls are published for public inspection.
What If Your Name Is Missing or Incorrect?
Discovering your name is missing from the list can be worrying, but it is usually correctable. The first step is to re-verify using a different search method to rule out a simple typo. If your name is genuinely missing, you must apply for a new registration by filling out Form 6. This can be done online through the portal or app, or submitted physically to your BLO. If your details like name, address, or date of birth are incorrect, you should submit Form 8 for correction. Form 8 is also used for shifting residence to a different constituency or requesting a replacement EPIC. Always save the application reference number to track its status online.
