Anyone who has taken an overnight train journey in India knows the challenge: trying to sleep through the constant movement and noise. The new Vande Bharat sleeper aims to solve this, with specific design choices that target passenger comfort.
A New Layout for Undisturbed Sleep
One of the
most common complaints on long-distance trains like the Rajdhani Express is the disturbance for passengers in berths near the coach entrance. This area is a hub of activity, with people boarding and alighting, vendors passing through, and the main door constantly opening and closing. The Vande Bharat sleeper train introduces a significant design change to address this. The new coaches feature a sliding entrance door and, crucially, an additional buffer of space that separates the main passage from the first set of sleeping berths. This layout creates a physical gap, ensuring that the movement and noise from the entrance area do not directly spill over into the sleeping quarters, a notable improvement over the conventional layout where berths are immediately adjacent to the high-traffic zone.
Smarter Lighting and Quieter Coaches
Harsh overhead lighting that gets switched on in the middle of the night is another major sleep disruptor. The Vande Bharat sleeper tackles this with a more sophisticated, passenger-centric lighting system. It includes special, softer lighting options for reading that won't disturb fellow passengers. Furthermore, the train incorporates ambient, sensor-based lighting in the passageways. This ensures there is enough light for safety and movement without the sudden, jarring brightness of traditional coach lights. Beyond lighting, significant engineering has gone into noise reduction. The coaches are built with improved soundproofing materials, and fully sealed gangways connect the compartments. These sealed connections, along with automatic, sensor-based inter-coach doors, minimise external noise and maintain a quieter, more tranquil environment inside.
Redesigned Berths and Smoother Rides
The improvements extend to the berths themselves and the overall ride quality. Compared to many existing coaches, the Vande Bharat sleeper features ergonomically designed berths with extra cushioning for enhanced comfort. A common point of difficulty, especially for older passengers, is climbing to the middle and upper berths. The new design includes a special, improved ladder to make this process easier and safer. The train's superior ride quality is another key factor. It is equipped with an advanced bogie design and semi-permanent couplers that minimise jerks and vibrations during acceleration, deceleration, and movement. This smoother, more stable journey contributes significantly to a passenger's ability to rest, a clear upgrade from the shudders and shakes often experienced on older train models.
Modern Amenities Over Traditional Comforts
While Rajdhani Express has long been the gold standard for premium overnight travel in India, the Vande Bharat sleeper is designed to surpass it with modern technology. The new trains feature bio-vacuum toilets with touchless fittings, a substantial upgrade in hygiene. While First AC coaches will even feature showers with hot water, a first for many routes. The train is also equipped with modern safety features like the KAVACH anti-collision system, advanced fire detection, and CCTV surveillance. These elements, combined with passengerfocused details like wider gangways and automatic doors, signal a fundamental shift from providing basic comfort to creating a holistic, worldclass travel experience. The goal is not just to replace the ageing Rajdhani fleet but to redefine what passengers can expect from an overnight journey on Indian Railways.
