The End of Weather Woes
For decades, travel to the Kashmir Valley has been at the mercy of the weather. The crucial Jammu-Srinagar national highway is prone to frequent closures due to heavy snowfall in winter and landslides during other seasons, often leaving travellers stranded.
The Vande Bharat Express changes this narrative entirely. It provides a dependable, all-weather alternative, ensuring that the valley remains connected year-round. This reliability is a game-changer for residents who need access to services and opportunities in other parts of the country, as well as for tourists whose travel plans are no longer subject to the unpredictability of road conditions. This consistent connectivity is expected to bring stability to travel and daily life in the region.
A New Benchmark for Speed and Comfort
The journey between Jammu and Srinagar, which can take six to seven hours by road, is drastically cut down to just a few hours by the Vande Bharat Express. This significant time-saving makes day trips and weekend travel more feasible than ever. Beyond speed, the train offers a level of comfort previously unavailable on this route. The fully air-conditioned coaches come equipped with automatic doors, bio-vacuum toilets, and sensor-based water taps. A specially designed version of the train for the Kashmir route includes advanced heating systems to prevent water lines from freezing and heated windshields for the drivers, ensuring smooth operations even in sub-zero temperatures. This makes the journey not just faster, but significantly more comfortable and safer.
A Journey Through Engineering Marvels
The route itself is a testament to modern engineering, navigating the rugged Himalayan terrain. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, of which this service is a part, features 38 tunnels and 927 bridges. Passengers will travel across the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, standing 359 meters above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower. Another highlight is the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. The Vande Bharat's large windows are designed to offer panoramic views of the breathtaking landscapes, turning the journey itself into a memorable part of the travel experience.
Boosting Tourism and the Local Economy
The introduction of a faster, more affordable, and reliable travel option is a massive boost for Kashmir's tourism sector. The service makes the region more accessible to a wider range of tourists who may have been deterred by expensive airfares or the arduous road journey. With direct connectivity from pilgrimage sites like Katra, the train is expected to significantly increase footfall. This influx of visitors directly supports local businesses, including hotels, tour operators, and artisans. Furthermore, efficient transportation facilitates the movement of goods, helping local industries and giving the region's economy a much-needed fillip.
Enhanced Connectivity Across the Region
The Vande Bharat service isn't just about connecting Srinagar to the rest of India; it's also about improving travel within the region. Services that initially ran between Katra and Srinagar were extended to Jammu, creating a direct link between Jammu and the valley. With the recent approval of a third Vande Bharat train on this route, Udhampur will also be included as a key stopover, addressing a popular public demand. This expansion of the network, with strategic halts at stations like Reasi and Banihal, strengthens connectivity for both pilgrims and local residents, making it easier to travel between major towns and destinations.
