Why Your ITR Refund Might Be Delayed
Several factors can cause a delay in receiving your income tax refund. The most common reason is that the return is still under processing by the Income Tax Department. However, other issues can also hold things up. These include not having completed
the mandatory e-verification of your return, discrepancies between the information you filed and the data in your Form 26AS or Annual Information Statement (AIS), or an outstanding tax demand from a previous year that is being adjusted against your refund. A significant and frequent cause of refund failure, even after it has been processed, is an issue with your bank account details.
How to Check Your Refund Status: E-Filing Portal
The official Income Tax e-filing portal is the primary place to track your refund. The process is simple: 1. Log In: Visit the e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) and log in using your User ID (PAN or Aadhaar) and password. 2. Navigate: Once on your dashboard, go to the 'e-File' menu, select 'Income Tax Returns', and then click on 'View Filed Returns'. 3. Check Status: You will see a list of your filed returns by Assessment Year. Select the relevant year and click 'View Details'. The portal will display the current status, such as 'Under Processing', 'Processed with refund due', or 'Refund Issued'. If a refund has been issued, the date of credit and amount may also be visible.
Alternative Method: TIN NSDL Website
If you want to check the status without logging into the e-filing portal, you can use the TIN NSDL website (now known as Protean). This is a quick alternative that only requires your PAN. 1. Visit the Portal: Go to the TIN refund status page (tin.tin.nsdl.com). 2. Enter Details: Input your PAN, select the correct Assessment Year from the dropdown menu, and enter the captcha code shown. 3. View Status: Click 'Proceed' to see the latest status of your refund. This will show if the refund has been dispatched by the department to your bank.
The Most Common Culprit: Bank Account Mismatches
The single biggest reason for a refund to fail after being approved is an issue with your bank account. The Income Tax Department now only issues e-refunds to pre-validated bank accounts linked with your PAN. Common errors include providing an incorrect account number or IFSC code, a name mismatch between your PAN and bank records, or using a bank account that has since been closed or become dormant. Failure to pre-validate your chosen account is a guaranteed way to cause a refund failure. This validation acts as a security check to ensure the money reaches the correct person.
Fixing the Problem: How to Pre-Validate Your Bank Account
Pre-validating your bank account is a non-negotiable step. To do this, log in to the e-filing portal and navigate to 'My Profile' from the top-right corner. Select 'My Bank Account'. Here you can see your added accounts. Click 'Add Bank Account' and carefully enter your account number, IFSC, and account type. The system will attempt to validate it automatically. For the validation to succeed, your name and PAN must match the records at your bank. Once validated, you must nominate this account for the refund by enabling the 'Nominate for Refund' toggle.
Your Refund Failed? How to Request a Reissue
If the portal shows 'Refund Failure', you must raise a 'Refund Reissue Request' after correcting the underlying bank account issue. To do this, log in to the e-filing portal and go to the 'Services' menu. Click on 'Refund Reissue'. The system will show the assessment year for which the refund failed. Select it, choose your newly pre-validated bank account, and proceed to e-verify the request using an Aadhaar OTP or another valid method. Once submitted, the department will re-initiate the payment to the corrected account. You can track the status of this reissue request in the same section.
