The booking must include a return flight and a minimum stay of three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. This offer is not something you can apply for directly; it's managed through the travel partners, who are reimbursed by the DCT. When You Must Apply for a Visa in Advance
If you don't qualify for a visa on arrival and aren't using the special promotional offer, you will need to secure a standard tourist visa before you travel. This is the most common route for Indian tourists. These visas are typically available for 30 or 60-day stays and must be sponsored. Your sponsor can be a UAE-based airline (like Etihad or Emirates), a hotel, or a licensed travel agency. Applying through an airline usually requires you to fly with them. The process is generally straightforward and done online, requiring you to upload documents like your passport copy, a photograph, and confirmed return flight tickets. Costs can range from ₹6,500 to ₹18,000 depending on the visa duration and service fees.
Understanding Transit Visas
If you have a long layover in Abu Dhabi, a transit visa can allow you to leave the airport and explore the city. The UAE offers two types: a 48-hour transit visa and a 96-hour transit visa. These must be arranged in advance, typically through your airline. Etihad Airways, for instance, facilitates these for passengers transiting through Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). To be eligible, you need a confirmed ticket for an onward journey to a third destination. This is a great, cost-effective way to get a taste of the city if your travel itinerary includes a lengthy stop. Keep in mind that these visas are single-entry and cannot be extended.
