The Sticker Shock of a European Summer
Indian travellers planning their summer escape are facing a significant surge in costs for trips to Europe. The primary drivers of this increase are airfares and accommodation. According to reports from travel agencies, flight tickets to popular European
hubs like London and Paris have seen a sharp increase, with some routes jumping by 20-30%, and in some cases, even up to 53%. This is largely attributed to rising jet fuel prices and high demand outpacing airline capacity. Once on the ground, the expenses continue to mount. Hotel rates in major European cities and holiday hotspots have soared, driven by a combination of post-pandemic pent-up demand, high inflation across the continent, and increased operating costs for hoteliers. In some cities like Rome and Berlin, room prices have seen staggering year-on-year increases. The total cost for a 7-10 day trip per person, which used to be manageable, is now comfortably settling in the ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh range for a mid-tier experience.
The Visa Hurdle Adds to the Woe
Beyond the direct costs, the Schengen visa process itself has become a source of stress and uncertainty. While the standard fee was increased to €90 (around ₹8,200 to ₹9,900 depending on the exchange rate), the total outlay including service charges, insurance, and other documentation can easily reach ₹13,000 to ₹17,000 per person. This fee is non-refundable, even in case of rejection. More frustrating for many applicants are the long waiting times for appointments at VFS centres and the extended processing periods, which can stretch from the standard 15 days to 30-45 days during the peak summer season. This uncertainty makes it difficult to book flights and hotels at favourable rates, forcing travellers to either book far in advance at risk or wait and face even higher last-minute prices.
The Smart Pivot: Budget-Friendly Europe and New Horizons
Despite the high costs in Western Europe, the dream isn't entirely over for determined travellers. A growing number of Indians are making a smart pivot. Some are exploring more affordable destinations within the continent, such as Eastern European countries like Hungary, Poland, and Romania, which offer rich history and culture without the hefty price tags of their western counterparts. Travel experts have also noted a recalibration of plans, with tourists opting for cooler, and sometimes less crowded, destinations in Northern Europe and the Alps instead of the sweltering Mediterranean. However, the most significant trend is a shift in focus towards closer, more value-driven destinations. Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia are seeing a surge in interest from Indian tourists. These locations offer a compelling mix of exotic culture, beautiful landscapes, and significantly lower costs for flights, accommodation, and daily expenses.
The Rise of the Value-Conscious Traveller
The current economic climate has reshaped the priorities of the Indian globetrotter. While the desire to travel remains strong, value for money has become a primary consideration. Travel platforms report that while demand for Europe is resilient, travellers are actively seeking ways to manage costs. This includes opting for shorter trips, being more flexible with dates to travel in the shoulder season, and exploring destinations that offer visa-free or visa-on-arrival facilities to save on time and upfront costs. Countries like Kazakhstan, Turkey, and even parts of Africa like Kenya and Senegal are emerging on the radar for those looking for unique experiences without breaking the bank. This shift indicates that the modern Indian traveller is more adaptable and strategic, unwilling to let budget constraints ground their wanderlust entirely, but determined to find the best possible experience for their money.
