At the same time, there's a nuanced concern from organizations like Nasscom that as AI automates routine tasks, junior engineers may miss out on developing the deep, foundational knowledge that comes from hands-on experience, creating a workforce that is AI-reliant rather than truly AI-native.
How IT Majors Are Racing to Adapt
India's IT giants are not standing still. Companies like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, and Wipro have launched massive, unprecedented upskilling and reskilling programs. These firms are investing billions to train hundreds of thousands of employees on generative AI and related technologies. The goal is to transform their vast workforces from traditional IT service providers into consultants and specialists who can help clients implement complex AI-driven projects. However, the challenge is immense. While broad-based training is underway, reports indicate that only a small fraction, perhaps as low as 2%, of the workforce is currently involved in shaping high-value AI systems. This highlights the difficulty in creating deep, specialized expertise at scale.

With the demand for AI professionals expected to exceed one million by 2026, failing to address this skills deficit could risk India's position as a global technology leader.
