From Kennel to 'Pet Hotel'
For generations, leaving a pet behind while travelling meant a trip to a basic kennel—a functional but often grim facility with concrete floors and chain-link enclosures. Today, a growing number of Indian pet owners are opting for something that looks
more like a luxury resort. These premium boarding facilities are redefining pet care, swapping cages for private, air-conditioned suites, some even equipped with soft bedding and live webcams so owners can check in on their furry friends from anywhere in the world. The centrepiece of many of these new establishments is often a 'splash pool,' a clean, safe, and supervised swimming area designed specifically for dogs. It’s not just about housing an animal; it’s about providing an experience. These 'pet hotels' offer curated meal plans, dedicated playtimes, grooming services, and socialisation sessions, ensuring the pet’s physical and mental well-being is the top priority.
The Rise of the 'Pet Parent'
This trend is not happening in a vacuum. It's a direct consequence of the 'pet humanisation' phenomenon, where pets are no longer seen as mere animals but as integral family members. Owners increasingly refer to themselves as 'pet parents,' and their pets as their 'fur babies.' This emotional shift has powerful commercial consequences. When you see your pet as a child, leaving them in a cage can trigger immense guilt and anxiety. Premium boarding facilities market themselves as the perfect antidote to this guilt. They offer peace of mind by promising a safe, stimulating, and loving environment. For a generation of urban millennials and Gen Z, who are often living in nuclear families and delaying having children, pets fill a significant emotional role. Spending on their comfort and happiness feels less like an extravagance and more like a parental duty.
A Booming Urban Market
This shift in mindset has fuelled a booming industry. Across major Indian cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, and Pune, upscale facilities are reporting unprecedented demand, especially during holiday seasons and long weekends. While hard national data on 'record bookings' is difficult to consolidate, individual operators consistently report being fully booked weeks or even months in advance. The price reflects the premium nature of the service. A night at a standard kennel might cost a few hundred rupees, but a stay at one of these luxury boardings can range from ₹1,000 to over ₹3,000 per night, depending on the city and the level of amenities. This willingness to spend highlights a growing segment of the population with disposable income and a deep emotional investment in their pets. The Indian pet care market, valued in the thousands of crores, is one of the fastest-growing in the world, and this premium boarding segment is a key driver of that growth.
More Than Just Pampering
While the splash pools and private suites grab headlines, proponents argue that the core benefit of these facilities is far more practical. The emphasis on 'cage-free' environments is a significant step forward for animal welfare. Traditional kennels can be stressful, leading to anxiety, depression, and behavioural issues in pets. In contrast, cage-free boardings allow dogs to socialise in supervised groups, which can be highly beneficial for their mental health and temperament. These facilities are also typically staffed by trained professionals who can identify signs of distress or illness. For pet parents, knowing their animal is not only comfortable but also safe and socially engaged is the real luxury. The premium price tag buys not just amenities but also expertise and a commitment to a pet’s holistic well-being.
