Know Your Free Allowance: What You Can Carry
Before you pack, it’s crucial to know the free luggage allowance, which varies by travel class. Passengers in AC First Class can carry up to 70 kg for free. Those in AC 2-Tier are permitted 50 kg. For travelers in AC 3-Tier, AC Chair Car, and Sleeper
Class, the free allowance is 40 kg. Passengers in Second Class have a limit of 35 kg. Children between 5 and 12 years old are entitled to half of the adult allowance, with a maximum cap of 50 kg depending on the class. Anything beyond these weights is considered excess luggage and needs to be booked and paid for.
The New Digital Solution: Booking Excess Luggage Online
To simplify travel, Indian Railways introduced a digital facility on July 31, 2026, allowing passengers with confirmed tickets to book their excess luggage online. This service is integrated into the IRCTC portal, meaning you can pay for extra bags at the same time you book your train ticket. This eliminates the need to arrive at the station 30 minutes early to wait in line at the luggage office. The online system provides clear guidelines on weight limits, charges, and restricted items before you depart. The facility is available for passengers in classes that permit carrying luggage beyond the free allowance after paying the required charges.
The Cost of Ignoring the Rules: Steep Penalties
Getting caught with unbooked excess luggage can be a costly mistake. If found with undeclared overweight bags during the journey, passengers face a penalty of six times the normal luggage rate. This isn't a new rule, but enforcement has become stricter to prevent overcrowded compartments. For example, if a passenger in Sleeper Class is carrying 80 kg (40 kg over the free limit) for a 500 km journey, they could book the excess for around ₹109. If caught without booking, the penalty could soar to ₹654. The minimum charge for booking any excess luggage is ₹30.
Understanding Maximum Limits and Dimensions
Besides the free allowance, there’s a maximum limit on how much luggage you can carry, even after paying. For instance, an AC First Class passenger can carry a maximum of 150 kg, while a Sleeper Class passenger can carry up to 80 kg. However, for some classes like AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car, the free allowance of 40 kg is also the maximum limit. Luggage dimensions also matter. Trunks and suitcases should ideally not exceed 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm. Larger items must be booked and transported in the separate brake van.
What Not to Pack: Prohibited and Dangerous Items
For the safety of all passengers, certain items are strictly forbidden on trains. This includes flammable materials like petrol, kerosene, and paint, as well as explosives such as firecrackers and gunpowder. Carrying gas cylinders, whether full or empty, is also illegal. Corrosive substances like strong acids are prohibited. Violating these rules is a punishable offense under the Railways Act, 1989, and can lead to imprisonment for up to three years, a fine, or both.
