A Landmark Connection Decades in the Making
The dream of connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India's rail network is now a reality. The Vande Bharat Express service runs on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a monumental 272-km project that was fully completed in June 2025
after nearly three decades of complex engineering work. This line navigates the challenging Himalayan terrain, featuring remarkable feats like the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. For travellers, this means a reliable, all-weather alternative to the often-congested and weather-dependent NH-44 road journey.
Route, Timings, and Frequency
The Vande Bharat service directly connects Jammu Tawi (JAT) and Srinagar (SINA), covering the 269-km distance in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. This is a significant improvement over the 8-11 hours required by road. As of August 2026, there are two pairs of trains providing four daily services, with a third service recently approved to meet high demand. The morning train (26401) departs Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM, reaching Srinagar at 11:10 AM. Other services run in the afternoon, ensuring flexible travel options. The trains operate six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. Key stops along the route include Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, and Banihal.
Fares and How to Book
The train offers two classes of seating: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). Fares for the AC Chair Car are approximately ₹715, while the more spacious Executive Chair Car costs around ₹1,320. Prices can vary slightly based on the specific service and dynamic pricing, so it's always best to check for the final amount during booking. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website and mobile app, which is the most convenient method. Given the route's popularity, especially during peak tourist and pilgrimage seasons, it is advisable to book your tickets well in advance.
A Specially Designed Train for the Valley
This isn't just any Vande Bharat Express. The rakes operating in Kashmir are specially designed to handle the region's extreme cold. They are equipped with advanced heating systems to prevent water lines and bio-toilets from freezing in sub-zero temperatures. The driver's cabin has a heated windshield to prevent fogging and ensure clear visibility. These climate-specific adaptations ensure the train can run smoothly and safely even during the harshest winter months, a key feature for providing all-weather connectivity.
The Onboard Experience
Travellers can expect the signature Vande Bharat experience, marked by comfort and modern amenities. The coaches are fully air-conditioned and feature large windows, perfect for soaking in the breathtaking views as the train crosses bridges and passes through tunnels. Seats are designed in an airline style and can be rotated, allowing passengers to always face the direction of travel or sit with a group. Onboard catering is available, and other facilities include Wi-Fi for infotainment, electric outlets, and clean, accessible bio-toilets. With a recent upgrade, these trains now run with 20 coaches to accommodate the high passenger demand.
