A New Vision for Rail Travel
Indian Railways is rolling out one of its most ambitious upgrade projects to date through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Launched in 2022, this initiative aims to redevelop over 1,300 stations across the country, moving beyond simple maintenance to a complete
overhaul. The core idea is to transform stations from mere transit points into integrated 'city centres' that are clean, modern, and user-friendly. The long-term vision involves creating detailed master plans for each station, ensuring they are equipped for future growth and seamlessly connected to other modes of transport. This redevelopment is not just about a fresh coat of paint; it's a fundamental reimagining of the passenger experience, with designs often inspired by local culture and heritage to give each station a unique identity.
Putting Accessibility First
A major focus of the upgrades is making stations accessible to everyone, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities (Divyangjans). Many of the redeveloped stations now include essential features like ramps, lifts, and escalators to help passengers navigate different levels with ease. Tactile paving on platforms and Braille signage are being installed to guide visually impaired travellers, a significant step towards enabling independent and dignified travel. Furthermore, dedicated accessible toilets and designated parking spaces are becoming standard. To manage crowds and ensure smoother movement, some stations are also getting wider foot-over-bridges and permanent holding areas, which provide comfortable waiting spaces with essential amenities away from the congested platforms.
Premium Comforts for the Modern Passenger
The transformation extends to the quality of amenities available to passengers. Outdated waiting rooms are being replaced with spacious, air-conditioned halls and executive lounges. Free Wi-Fi is being rolled out, allowing travellers to stay connected while they wait. The culinary experience is also getting an upgrade, with modern food courts and kiosks offering a wider variety of options. Taking a cue from airports, some stations are introducing premium features like dedicated spaces for business meetings and kids' play areas. In a unique move to promote local artisans and products, many stations now feature kiosks under the 'One Station One Product' scheme. Some divisions are even experimenting with new entertainment options, such as gaming zones, to enhance the waiting experience.
Where Are These Changes Happening?
This massive undertaking is spread across the entire country, with projects in various stages of completion. Recent inaugurations include several redeveloped stations in Tamil Nadu, such as Chennai Egmore, Coimbatore Junction, and Madurai Junction. In North India, stations like Jalandhar Cantt in Punjab and Jammu Tawi have seen significant upgrades. The scheme also covers 32 stations in Chhattisgarh and numerous others across every region, from major metros like Mumbai and Delhi to smaller but vital hubs. The New Delhi Railway Station, for instance, has commissioned a large passenger holding area as a pilot project to effectively manage peak-hour crowds with facilities like extra ticket counters, RO water, and enhanced security. The goal is to ensure that the benefits of this modernization are felt nationwide, improving the travel experience for millions of daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.
