Non-caloric sweeteners like sucralose, aspartame, and stevia are everywhere. From diet sodas and protein bars to yoghurts and 'healthy' snacks, they promise the pleasure of sweetness without the calories or the blood sugar spike. For health-conscious
individuals, especially young adults trying to manage their weight or reduce sugar intake, they seem like a perfect solution. In a country like India, with rising concerns about diabetes and obesity, the market for these products is booming. The core promise is simple: a sweet taste that passes through the body without being absorbed, therefore having no metabolic impact. However, a growing body of research is challenging this very assumption.
A Shock to the System
The primary way these sweeteners appear to affect the body is through the gut microbiome—the trillions of bacteria living in our intestines. These microbes play a crucial role in digestion, immunity, and even metabolism. Since artificial sweeteners aren't digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract, they travel down to the colon, where they come into direct contact with this microbial community.
