1994: Brazil vs. Italy
The first time the world's biggest prize was decided by a shootout was at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. After a tense and goalless 120 minutes in the searing American heat, Brazil and Italy lined up for the ultimate test of nerve. It was a final
defined as much by its misses as its makes. Italy's captain, Franco Baresi, fired the first kick over the bar, but Brazil's Márcio Santos had his effort saved by Gianluca Pagliuca, keeping the tension high. After a few successful conversions, Italy's Daniele Massaro was denied by Taffarel, giving Brazil the advantage. This brought Italy's hero of the tournament, Roberto Baggio, to the spot with his nation's hopes on his shoulders. He had to score to keep Italy in it. In one of the most iconic and heartbreaking moments in World Cup history, Baggio skied his penalty over the crossbar, and Brazil became world champions for the fourth time. The image of a triumphant Taffarel on his knees and a devastated Baggio staring at the ground became an unforgettable symbol of the shootout's cruelty and drama.
2006: Italy vs. France
Twelve years after their heartbreak, Italy found themselves in another World Cup final penalty shootout, this time against France in Berlin. Unlike the 1994 final, this match had goals and a moment of madness that is still talked about today. Zinedine Zidane gave France an early lead with an audacious Panenka penalty, before Marco Materazzi equalized for Italy with a powerful header. The score remained 1-1 through extra time, but not before Zidane, in the final match of his legendary career, was famously sent off for headbutting Materazzi in the chest. Down to ten men, France held on for penalties. This time, Italy was flawless. They converted all five of their spot-kicks. The decisive moment came when French striker David Trezeguet's shot crashed against the crossbar and stayed out. It fell to Fabio Grosso to take Italy's fifth and final penalty. He made no mistake, sending the ball into the top corner to seal Italy's fourth World Cup title and banish the ghosts of 1994.
2022: Argentina vs. France
Many have called the 2022 final in Qatar the greatest of all time, and for good reason. It was a spectacular battle between two titans, Lionel Messi's Argentina and Kylian Mbappé's France. Argentina dominated for 80 minutes, going 2-0 up through a Messi penalty and a brilliant team goal finished by Ángel Di María. But a stunning comeback from France, led by a quick-fire Mbappé brace, sent the game to extra time. Messi scored again to put Argentina ahead 3-2, only for Mbappé to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot, making it 3-3 and forcing a shootout. The shootout was a showcase of composure from Argentina and the heroics of their goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez. While Messi and Mbappé both scored their opening kicks, Martínez's mind games and a key save gave Argentina the edge. It was Gonzalo Montiel, who had conceded the late penalty, who stepped up to take the winning kick. He coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, clinching a 4-2 shootout victory and Argentina's third World Cup in an explosion of joy.
