An End to the Uncertainty
For the past few months, there has been significant confusion regarding Thailand's visa policy for Indian citizens. Earlier this year, the Thai cabinet had considered scrapping the popular 60-day visa-free scheme that had been a major draw for tourists.
This proposal, which was never actually implemented, caused a noticeable dip in visitor arrivals from India as travellers became unsure about the rules. In response to this and feedback from the tourism industry, the government has now clarified its position, providing a clear and stable policy for one of its most important tourism markets.
The New Rule: 30 Days Visa-Free
The key change is the length of stay. Indian passport holders will now be granted a 30-day visa-exempt stay upon arrival in Thailand. This replaces the previous temporary arrangement that allowed for a 60-day stay. The decision was part of a broader revision of Thailand's visa framework, which saw the country-wide 60-day scheme for 93 nations revoked due to concerns over misuse and national security. However, recognising India as a key market, the Thai government opted to grant a special 30-day exemption rather than reverting to a more restrictive visa-on-arrival system.
Why This Is Still Good News
While the stay period has been reduced, the 30-day visa-free entry is still a major advantage for Indian travellers. It avoids the cost and paperwork associated with applying for a visa or getting a visa-on-arrival. According to Thai authorities, the new limit is more than sufficient for the vast majority of visitors, as the average stay for an Indian tourist is just over seven days. This policy aligns the rules with typical travel behaviour while keeping the doors wide open, ensuring that planning a spontaneous trip to the 'Land of Smiles' remains simple and accessible.
Your Pre-Travel Checklist
Even with visa-free entry, there are essential documents and requirements you must prepare. Make sure your passport has at least six months of validity from your date of entry. You will also need proof of a confirmed return flight ticket, confirmed accommodation bookings for your stay, and proof of sufficient funds for your expenses. Additionally, all foreign travellers are required to fill out the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arriving in the country.
When Do the New Rules Begin?
It is important for travellers to note that these new visa revisions will not be immediate. The change to a 30-day stay will officially come into effect 15 days after the new regulations are published in Thailand's Royal Gazette. As of mid-July 2026, the exact date of publication had not been announced. Until the new rule is active, the previous entry conditions remain in place. Anyone who enters Thailand before the change is official will be allowed to stay for the duration they were granted upon arrival. It is always best to check the latest updates from the Royal Thai Embassy or official tourism sources before you travel.
