The Current 24-Hour Haul
For decades, travellers relying on trains between Mumbai and Bengaluru have had to contend with a journey that stretches across a full day. The primary direct train on this route, the Udyan Express, typically takes around 22 to 24 hours to cover the 1,118-kilometre
distance. This lengthy travel time has been a long-standing pain point for professionals, students, and families shuttling between these two critical economic centres. While other trains operate on the corridor, their travel times are comparable, often ranging from 22 to over 25 hours, making a faster alternative a long-awaited development.
A Game-Changer Arrives November 1
Indian Railways is set to address this gap with the launch of the country's second Vande Bharat Sleeper train, connecting Mumbai and Bengaluru. Union Minister of State for Railways, V. Somanna, announced that the service will be inaugurated on November 1, 2026, a date that coincides with Karnataka Rajyotsava. This move marks a significant upgrade in overnight travel, introducing a semi-high-speed, premium experience to one of the nation's busiest travel corridors. The approval for the service was confirmed by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier in the year, signalling a strategic focus on enhancing connectivity between the two major metropolises.
Slashing the Journey to 16 Hours
The most significant advantage of the new Vande Bharat Sleeper is the dramatic reduction in travel time. The train is expected to complete the journey in approximately 16 hours, effectively saving passengers up to eight hours compared to current services. According to proposed schedules, the train will operate six days a week. While timetables may vary slightly, one proposed schedule has the train departing from Bengaluru at 7:50 pm and arriving in Mumbai at 11:55 am the next day. The return journey would leave Mumbai at 8:10 pm and reach Bengaluru at 11:55 am. This allows for a comfortable overnight trip, arriving fresh in the destination city before midday.
Inside the Modern Sleeper Experience
Designed for long-distance overnight comfort, the Vande Bharat Sleeper aims to rival the experience of premium train services globally. The 16-coach, fully air-conditioned train will accommodate 823 passengers in a three-class configuration: one AC First Class coach, four AC 2-tier coaches, and eleven AC 3-tier coaches. The interiors feature cushioned berths, improved lighting with individual reading lights, and modern amenities like automatic sliding doors, bio-vacuum toilets, and CCTV surveillance for enhanced safety. Developed by BEML, these trainsets are engineered to run at speeds up to 160 kmph, ensuring a smoother and faster ride.
Route, Fares, and What's Next
The service will connect Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with a terminal in Bengaluru, likely Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) for regular service. Key stops expected along the route include Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, and Guntakal, improving connectivity for several important towns. While official fare structures have not yet been released by Indian Railways, reports estimate that ticket prices could range from approximately ₹2,600 to ₹4,250 depending on the class. The launch of this service follows the first Vande Bharat Sleeper on the Howrah-Kamakhya route and is part of a larger plan to roll out 260 such trainsets across the country, fundamentally upgrading India's long-distance rail network.
