A Journey Decades in the Making
The introduction of the Vande Bharat service to Srinagar is the culmination of the monumental Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Sanctioned in the mid-1990s, this 272-km railway line is an engineering marvel, navigating the treacherous
Pir Panjal mountain range. The route features 38 tunnels and 927 bridges, including the iconic Chenab Bridge—the world's highest railway arch bridge—and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. After decades of complex construction, the final sections were completed, allowing for direct train services to connect the valley with the rest of India, a milestone that was achieved with services being extended from Katra to Jammu Tawi in April 2026.
The Vande Bharat Experience
The Vande Bharat Express has fundamentally changed travel between the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley. The service, which was first launched between Katra and Srinagar in June 2025 and later extended to Jammu Tawi, has been met with overwhelming demand. In fact, the route has proven so popular that Indian Railways has already introduced multiple services and is adding a third Vande Bharat train to meet the high passenger volume. The journey covers the 269-km distance in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes, a significant improvement over the often unpredictable 8-11 hour road journey on NH-44, which is prone to weather-related disruptions. The trains offer modern amenities, including reclining seats and large windows to soak in the stunning Himalayan scenery.
