BIS hallmarking is a certification of purity provided by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India's national standards body. Since June 2021, it has been mandatory for jewellers in specified districts across the country to sell only hallmarked gold
jewellery. This system was put in place to protect consumers from being sold gold of lower purity than claimed. When a piece of jewellery is hallmarked, it means its metal content has been tested and verified in a licensed Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC). The Three Signs of Purity to Look For

1. The BIS Logo: A small, triangular symbol confirms the piece has been certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
2. Purity and Fineness Grade: This indicates the gold's caratage. For instance, '22K916' means it is 22-karat gold with 91.6% purity. Other common grades are 18K750 (18-karat, 75% pure) and 14K585 (14-karat, 58.5% pure).

HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification. It is a six-digit alphanumeric code (a mix of letters and numbers) that is unique to each individual piece of jewellery. No two ornaments can have the same HUID. This code's primary purpose is to make every single hallmarked item traceable. When an item is hallmarked, its HUID is registered in the BIS database along with details like the jeweller who sold it, the AHC that tested it, its purity, and the type of jewellery. This creates a transparent and immutable record, making it extremely difficult for counterfeit marks to go undetected and providing a clear history for each piece.
How to Verify HUID in Seconds
The single most powerful tool for a consumer is the BIS CARE mobile app, available for free on both Android and iOS. This official app allows you to instantly verify the HUID of any piece of jewellery before you buy it. Here’s the simple, step-by-step process:
1. Download and open the 'BIS CARE' app from the official Play Store or App Store.
2. Select the “Verify HUID” option on the app's home screen.
3. Carefully enter the six-character HUID code that is engraved on the jewellery. You may need a magnifying glass, which the jeweller should provide.
4. Tap 'Search'. The app will connect to the BIS database and display the official details linked to that HUID: the jeweller's registration, the item's purity, the type of article, and the hallmarking centre's details.
If the details on the screen match the item in your hand and the information provided by the seller, you can be confident in your purchase. If the app shows a mismatch or returns no result, it is a major red flag.
