The Autumn Fruit Harvest
October is a prime time for fruits that are both sweet and nourishing. Apples make their crisp appearance, perfect for eating fresh or adding to desserts. This is also the peak season for pomegranates, their jewel-like seeds adding a burst of flavour
to salads, raitas, and festive rice dishes. Another favourite, the custard apple (sitaphal), becomes widely available. Its creamy, sweet pulp is a treat on its own or can be blended into delicious milkshakes and desserts. Early season oranges also begin to show up in markets, offering a juicy dose of Vitamin C as the weather cools. These fruits not only taste delicious but are packed with antioxidants to help boost immunity for the changing season.
Root Vegetables Take Centre Stage
As the earth cools, it’s time for grounding root vegetables to shine. Carrots harvested in October are particularly sweet and juicy, making them ideal for everything from classic gajar ka halwa to simple stir-fries and salads. Sweet potatoes (shakarkandi) are another seasonal star, perfect for roasting, boiling for chaat, or mashing into savoury dishes. You'll also find an abundance of radishes and turnips. These vegetables are not only hearty and filling but also rich in fibre and essential nutrients, preparing your body for the coming winter.
Cruciferous Vegetables and Gourds
Cauliflower is at its best during this time of year. Its florets are tender and flavourful, making it a versatile ingredient for beloved Indian dishes like Aloo Gobi, pakoras, or roasted as a side dish. Cabbage also comes into season, great for detoxification and gut health. While the heavy monsoon gourds are on their way out, you can still find the last of the season's best, such as ridge gourd and bottle gourd, which are perfect for light, easy-to-digest curries.
The Return of Leafy Greens
The cooler, brighter days of October signal the triumphant return of fresh leafy greens. Spinach (palak) is back in season, bringing with it a wealth of iron and vitamins. It’s the perfect time to enjoy Palak Paneer, add it to dals, or blend it into nutritious smoothies. Mustard greens (sarson) also begin to appear, especially in the northern parts of the country, promising the eventual winter delight of Sarson ka Saag. These greens are essential for boosting energy and supporting overall health during the seasonal transition.
Warming Spices and Aromatics
October's cooler evenings call for warming spices that comfort from within. Fresh ginger and turmeric are excellent for boosting digestion and fighting inflammation. This is a great time to make ginger-infused chai or add fresh turmeric to milk and curries. As the festive season, including Dussehra and the lead-up to Diwali, gets underway, kitchens fill with the aromas of cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves, used in countless sweets and special dishes that define this celebratory period.
