A Major System Overhaul
Indian Railways is replacing its core Passenger Reservation System (PRS), the digital backbone that has managed train bookings for nearly four decades. The new, next-generation platform is designed to handle a much larger volume of traffic, a critical
need given that nearly 89% of all reserved tickets are now booked online. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), this cloud-based system is being introduced in phases to ensure a smooth transition and minimise disruption for the millions of passengers who use the service daily.
Five Times the Booking Capacity
The most significant improvement is a massive increase in capacity. The old system could handle about 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The upgraded platform boosts this capacity nearly five-fold, to over 1,50,000 bookings per minute. This means the system will be far more resilient during peak hours, especially during the frantic Tatkal booking windows that often caused the website and app to slow down or crash. The capacity for handling passenger enquiries—like checking PNR status or seat availability—is also getting a 10x boost, from 4 lakh to 40 lakh enquiries per minute.
A Smarter, AI-Powered Experience
The upgrade incorporates Artificial Intelligence to help travellers make better decisions. A key feature is the enhanced AI-powered waitlist prediction tool. This tool analyses historical data to estimate the probability of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed. According to railway officials, the accuracy of this prediction has already improved significantly, helping passengers decide whether to book a waitlisted ticket or look for alternatives.
Changes to Tatkal Ticket Booking
For those booking Tatkal tickets at physical counters, several zones, including the West Central Railway, have introduced a new token-based system starting August 1, 2026. Instead of waiting in long lines for hours, passengers can now collect a numbered token during a specific time window. This aims to manage crowds and streamline the process. For online Tatkal bookings, the increased system capacity is the main advantage, promising a smoother and faster experience during the high-demand morning hours. The beta version of the new IRCTC website, launched in July, already showed a 5% improvement in successful Tatkal bookings within the first three minutes.
A Revamped Website and User Verification
Accompanying the backend upgrade is a redesigned IRCTC beta website with a cleaner interface and simpler navigation. It simplifies everything from booking and checking your PNR status to cancelling tickets. First-time users on the new site will be required to complete a one-time verification of their registered mobile number and email address before they can book tickets. This is a crucial security step. The new site also integrates Aadhaar authentication more smoothly under the user's profile section.
New Rules for Excess Luggage
In a separate but related update from August 1, 2026, Indian Railways has also digitised the process for booking excess luggage. Passengers with confirmed tickets can now declare and pay for extra baggage online through the IRCTC portal. This service applies to luggage that is carried within the coach, and is intended to reduce queues at parcel offices. Be aware that carrying unbooked excess luggage can result in a penalty up to six times the normal rate.
