The Stay is Now the Star
The traditional travel script has been flipped. According to the 'How India Travels 2026 – The Homes Edit' report by Booking.com and VIDEC Consultants, the choice of accommodation has become the cornerstone of the journey for many Indians. It's no longer
just about finding a convenient place to sleep after a day of sightseeing. Instead, the stay itself is becoming the primary attraction. This trend is especially powerful for short breaks and weekend getaways, where a unique property can provide a complete and immersive escape without the need for a packed itinerary. A staggering 87% of travellers surveyed believe that alternative stays, such as homestays, villas, and apartments, help create more meaningful holiday memories.
What Makes a Stay 'Distinctive'?
A 'distinctive stay' is about more than just luxury; it’s about experience and authenticity. Indian travellers are actively seeking out unconventional properties that offer a genuine connection to the place. Think of waking up in a glass-walled treetop cabin in Kasauli, participating in stargazing sessions at a nature retreat near Sariska Tiger Reserve, or living in a heritage haveli in Rajasthan. These accommodations offer more than a room; they offer a narrative. According to recent survey data, 85% of travellers associate these alternative stays with authentic local experiences. This shift also reflects a desire to escape urban chaos and find peace in nature-led escapes, farm stays, and serene wellness retreats.
The Rise of the 'Staycation' Mindset
This trend is fueled by a profound change in traveller psychology. The rise of 'microcations'—short, one- to three-night trips—means people want to maximise impact in a limited time. A unique stay provides a concentrated dose of novelty and relaxation. Furthermore, after years of conventional hotel stays, many are looking for something that feels personal and tells a story. For families and groups, villas and homestays offer value, privacy, and shared spaces that a hotel cannot. In fact, 83% of travellers feel these stays are ideal for trips with loved ones. The trend is also catching on with business travellers, who now account for nearly one in five bookings at alternative accommodations, valuing the extra space and authentic local feel.
Beyond the Usual Tourist Trail
The focus on stay-led travel is also reshaping India's tourism map. While popular destinations still command a large share of bookings, this trend is driving growth in Tier-2 cities and offbeat locations. As travellers search for specific types of stays—like a quiet farm or a beachfront villa—they are discovering and popularising new areas. Cities like Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Indore, and Ayodhya saw alternative accommodation listings more than double between June 2025 and June 2026. This helps distribute tourism more evenly, taking pressure off overcrowded hotspots and channelling revenue into local communities in less-frequented regions.
Planning Your Next Stay-Led Break
Embracing this trend means changing how you plan your trip. Instead of first picking a city and then looking for a hotel, start by browsing for the kind of stay you want to experience. Are you dreaming of a cosy cottage in the mountains, a houseboat on serene backwaters, or a modern apartment in a bustling new city? Platforms are adapting to this, with flexible search options that allow you to discover unique property types. This approach puts the experience first. For many modern Indian travellers, Wi-Fi speed and unique experiences have become more important than traditional hotel star ratings, showing that the definition of a premium getaway is evolving.
