A Partnership for the Planet
The images come from NISAR, the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite, a landmark collaboration between the US space agency and the Indian Space Research Organisation. Launched in July 2025, this mission is one of the most sophisticated Earth-observing
satellites ever built. Its purpose is to track changes on our planet’s surface with remarkable precision, monitoring everything from volcanic activity and earthquakes to the subtle shifts in forests, farmlands, and, most critically, the vast, frozen expanses of the polar regions. The data, which is now publicly available, marks a new era in global climate monitoring.
Seeing the Invisible
Unlike standard optical satellites that work like a camera in space, NISAR uses a powerful radar system. This is a game-changer for a place like Antarctica, which is often shrouded in clouds and experiences months of total darkness. Radar waves can pierce through clouds and work day or night, providing an uninterrupted stream of data. Even more impressively, NISAR's L-band radar can penetrate the surface of snow and ice, revealing hidden structures and dynamics that are invisible to the naked eye. One of the first images released shows a feature nicknamed “the hummingbird” by scientists—a stunning pattern of deep cracks and fractures in the ice caused by a submerged mountaintop, something an optical satellite would largely miss.
What the New Images Reveal
The so-called “hummingbird” image, captured over a feature known as Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja in East Antarctica, demonstrates NISAR's unique capabilities. The image uses colour to represent different properties of the ice. Smooth, uniform ice surfaces appear magenta, while heavily fractured areas with deep crevasses are shown in bright green. These green lines highlight the stress and movement within the glacier as it flows around the unseen obstacle of the mountain below. By observing these details, scientists can get a much clearer picture of how glaciers move, where they are weakening, and how they respond to changes in the environment. It’s like getting an X-ray of the ice sheet.
A Critical Tool for Climate Science
Antarctica's ice sheets hold the majority of Earth's fresh water, and their stability is a crucial factor in determining global sea levels. Understanding how quickly this ice is melting and flowing toward the ocean is one of the most urgent questions in climate research. NISAR is designed to answer that question by measuring changes in the ice surface with a precision of less than a centimetre. By repeatedly scanning the same areas every 12 days, the satellite will create a time-lapse view of the entire continent, allowing researchers to track ice flow speed, pinpoint areas of rapid melt, and improve the models used to predict future sea-level rise. This data provides the hard evidence needed to understand the real-world consequences of a warming planet.
