The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC)
A game-changer for India's logistics sector, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) is set to become fully operational in 2026. On September 8, key sections including New Sanand to Makarpura and routes connecting to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPA)
in Mumbai are being inaugurated. This completes the entire corridor, a high-capacity, high-speed rail network exclusively for transporting goods. For Gujarat, which houses many of the nation's key industrial hubs and ports, this is monumental. The WDFC will enable faster movement of export-import cargo, reduce logistics costs, and decongest the existing railway network, which can now be better utilized for passenger trains.
Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: The Gujarat Lifeline
India's longest expressway is steadily nearing completion, with its extensive stretches across Gujarat playing a pivotal role. The Godhra-Vadodara section of the expressway opened on a trial basis in April 2026, significantly improving regional connectivity. While some parts of the Vadodara-Mumbai stretch face delays, the crucial Delhi-Vadodara section is targeted for completion by June 2026. This eight-lane, access-controlled corridor is designed to cut the Delhi-Mumbai travel time to just 12 hours. For Gujarat, the expressway enhances the connectivity of major economic zones like Vadodara, Surat, and Bharuch, promising smoother, faster, and safer road travel for commercial and private vehicles alike.
Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway: Gateway to a Smart City
Set to be a crucial artery for one of India's most ambitious industrial projects, the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway is expected to become operational in 2026. This 109 km, four-lane greenfield corridor will connect Ahmedabad to the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), India's first greenfield smart city. With a designed speed of 120 km/h, the expressway will drastically cut travel time from over two hours to just around 45-60 minutes. Its completion is a critical step in unlocking the economic potential of the Dholera SIR and the upcoming Dholera International Airport, facilitating rapid movement of goods and people.
New Rail Lines and Regional Connectivity
Beyond the headline-grabbing expressways, a host of other rail projects are enhancing connectivity within Gujarat and with neighbouring states. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit on September 8, 2026, includes the dedication of the new Jobat-Tanda Road rail line, connecting the tribal areas of Alirajpur to the national network. Foundation stones are also being laid for projects like the Vadodara-Ratlam third and fourth lines and the gauge conversion of the Miyagam-Choranda section. These projects are aimed at increasing both passenger and freight capacity, reducing rail congestion, and strengthening the link between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
The Bullet Train: A Glimpse of the Future
While the full commissioning of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is anticipated in 2027 or 2028, 2026 is a year of significant progress. The first test coach for the bullet train has already been manufactured, and civil construction on key sections like Vapi-Surat is expected to be completed by December 2026. The first operational section, between Surat and Bilimora, is targeted for commissioning next year. As construction on stations, tracks, and tunnels progresses rapidly, the project is moving from a blueprint to a tangible reality, heralding a new era of high-speed travel in India.
