Understanding the 'Free Visa' Offer
To boost tourism from one of its most important markets, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a special programme for Indian travellers. This is not a general visa-waiver, but a targeted travel incentive where
the cost of a UAE entry visa is covered for eligible tourists. The initiative makes it clear that while the visa fee is waived for the traveller, the visa itself is still required and must be processed and approved under standard UAE immigration rules. The programme aims to reduce the upfront cost of a holiday, saving travellers approximately Dh285 per person. It is a pilot programme with a limited scope, initially supporting up to 20,000 visas.
Who Is Eligible for the Programme?
The offer is exclusively for Indian passport holders who are beginning their journey in India. However, eligibility is not automatic. To qualify for the complimentary visa, travellers must book a complete holiday package through a participating travel partner or an approved online travel agency. The core requirements of the package include a return flight ticket from India and a hotel stay in Abu Dhabi for a minimum of three consecutive nights. Travellers cannot apply for this offer independently; it must be part of the qualifying holiday booking.
Programme Dates and How to Apply
This special tourism programme is available for a limited time, running from August 1 to October 31, 2026. Since the offer is capped at 20,000 visas on a pilot basis, it is crucial for interested travellers to act fast and confirm availability. The application process is handled entirely by the travel provider. Once you find a participating agency and book an eligible package (with at least three nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel and return flights from India), the travel partner will process the visa on your behalf. They will either work with a DCT-appointed company to have the visa fee covered directly or get reimbursed by DCT Abu Dhabi.
What the Programme Doesn't Cover
It is essential to understand the limitations of this offer. The programme specifically covers the cost of the UAE entry visa. It does not include other travel expenses such as airfare, hotel accommodation, meals, or any on-ground activities in Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, the offer is tied to a minimum three-night stay and is designed to encourage tourism, not for transit passengers making a short stop. This distinguishes it from the standard 48-hour free transit visa that is available to passengers of any nationality transiting through Abu Dhabi's airport for more than eight hours, which is a separate scheme. This promotional visa is for those planning a dedicated holiday in the capital.
Maximising Your Abu Dhabi Stay
For Indian travellers who qualify, this programme provides an excellent opportunity for a cost-effective city break. A stay of three or four days offers ample time to explore the emirate's premier attractions. You can visit the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, experience the art and culture at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, or enjoy the thrills at theme parks on Yas Island, such as Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World. The financial saving on the visa for a family or group can be significant, freeing up more budget for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Before booking, ensure your travel agent explicitly confirms that the free visa is included in your package.
