Monsoon Intensifies Over North India
The southwest monsoon has entered an active phase over North India, prompting the IMD to issue warnings for widespread rainfall through the weekend and into next week. According to bulletins released on July 11th and 12th, a combination of weather systems,
including a persistent monsoon trough, is driving this spell of wet weather. Forecasters are predicting moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in several regions, advising residents to brace for potential disruptions. This intensification marks a significant period for the monsoon season, which had previously been advancing across the country.
States Under Heavy Rainfall Warning
The IMD's alert singles out several states for particular caution. The Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are expected to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall, with heavy spells likely to continue until July 15th and beyond. For these mountainous regions, the primary concerns are landslides, flash floods, and the swelling of rivers. In the plains, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are also on alert for heavy rainfall until at least July 13. Jammu and Kashmir is forecast to receive heavy showers over the weekend of July 12-13. Eastern Uttar Pradesh is also flagged for heavy rainfall from July 12 to July 15. Residents in all these areas have been urged to stay updated with local weather advisories.
Impact on Cities and Travel
For urban centers like Delhi-NCR, the primary challenges from intense rainfall are waterlogging in low-lying areas and significant traffic congestion. Authorities have warned that the downpours could reduce visibility and disrupt daily commutes. In the hill states, the impact is more severe, with reports of road blockages and damage to infrastructure already emerging from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In Uttarakhand, heavy rains have already led to the closure of numerous roads, including national highways, affecting travel and pilgrimage routes. Travelers have been advised to exercise extreme caution, check their routes in advance, and avoid vulnerable areas where possible.
How to Stay Safe During the Downpour
With heavy rain forecast, taking precautions is essential. The IMD advises people to avoid areas prone to waterlogging and to check for traffic advisories before travelling. It is crucial to stay away from overflowing drains and not to touch electrical wires or poles. Ensure your home is prepared by checking for leaky roofs and securing loose objects outside that could be affected by strong winds. It's also wise to have an emergency kit with essentials like a torch, first-aid supplies, and dry food. In hilly areas, be particularly vigilant about the risks of landslides and rockfalls, and listen for any official evacuation warnings. Following guidance from local authorities is the best way to remain safe during periods of intense weather.
