An active monsoon spell is impacting large swathes of North India. The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand through the middle of July. Alerts for heavy rainfall have also been extended to Punjab,
Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi for the weekend. Eastern Uttar Pradesh is also expected to receive significant rainfall. These warnings come after a period of intense rain that has already caused disruptions in the region.
High Risk for Landslides in Hill States
For those planning trips to the mountains, the alerts carry significant weight. Authorities have warned that the persistent rainfall dramatically increases the risk of landslides, flash floods, and rockfalls in vulnerable districts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In recent days, heavy rains have already triggered landslides that blocked over 100 roads in Uttarakhand, including national highways, leaving travelers and pilgrims stranded. One incident on the Yamunotri National Highway required the rescue of around 100 pilgrims who were cut off for two days. Given the saturated slopes, non-essential travel to these high-risk areas is strongly discouraged.

The monsoon's impact is not limited to the hills. Major cities across the plains, particularly Delhi-NCR, are bracing for significant traffic disruptions. Recent downpours have already led to severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, underpasses, and major arterial roads in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Authorities have been forced to issue traffic advisories and deploy emergency pumps to clear inundated highways. Commuters in Gurugram were advised to work from home earlier in the week to avoid gridlock. Residents in urban areas should anticipate slower traffic, potential road closures, and crowded public transport.
