For decades, the Rajdhani Express has been the gold standard for premium overnight train travel in India. But a new contender is here, capturing the imagination of city dwellers. The Vande Bharat Sleeper, the first of which was launched in January 2026,
is being positioned as more than just a train; it's a fundamental upgrade to the long-distance travel experience. With its promise of higher speeds, modern amenities, and a focus on comfort, it aims to become a compelling alternative to short-haul flights, especially for those travelling between major economic hubs like Mumbai and Bengaluru. The buzz is palpable, with social media videos from early passengers, including foreign travellers, comparing the experience to a "five-star hotel on rails."
What Makes It a Game-Changer?
The Vande Bharat sleeper isn't just a cosmetic update. It's an entirely new type of train, known as a trainset. Unlike conventional trains pulled by a separate locomotive, its power is distributed across the coaches, allowing for much faster acceleration and deceleration. This design cuts down journey times significantly. Inside, the focus is on a passenger experience that rivals international standards. Each 16-coach train accommodates 823 passengers across AC First, 2-Tier, and 3-Tier classes. Features include ergonomically designed berths with better cushioning, sensor-based taps in odour-free bio-vacuum toilets, automatic sliding doors, and enhanced CCTV surveillance. For added comfort, there are individual reading lights with USB charging points, and the First AC coach even boasts hot water showers.
Speed, Comfort, and Safety Combined
Capable of reaching speeds up to 180 km/h, the Vande Bharat sleeper is designed to run at an operational speed of 160 km/h, considerably faster than most existing long-distance trains. For instance, the first service between Howrah and Kamakhya cut travel time by up to six hours. This speed is matched with a focus on ride quality, with superior suspension for a smoother journey and noise reduction measures. Safety is also paramount. The trains are built with high-strength stainless steel and crashworthy elements. Crucially, they are equipped with Kavach, India's indigenous automatic train protection system designed to prevent collisions.
The Rajdhani Rivalry Heats Up
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is seen as the natural successor to the Rajdhani Express. While the Rajdhani has been a symbol of premium travel for over 50 years, the Vande Bharat offers a distinctly modern edge. Key differentiators include the trainset design for quicker journeys and fully sealed gangways that keep the interiors clean and quiet. The interiors are designed with a sleek, hotel-like aesthetic, moving away from the purely functional design of older trains. While fares are expected to be comparable to Rajdhani services, the overall experience aims to deliver superior value, especially for travellers who value time and comfort.
When and Where Can You Travel?
The first Vande Bharat sleeper service was inaugurated on January 17, 2026, between Howrah and Kamakhya. More routes are being progressively rolled out. A highly anticipated service connecting the financial and tech capitals of Mumbai and Bengaluru has been approved, with trainsets already stationed in Bengaluru for final testing as of July 2026. Indian Railways plans to introduce 12 sleeper services by the end of 2026, with a long-term vision of having hundreds more by the end of the decade. Manufacturing is being handled by a consortium of companies including BEML, which rolled out the first prototype, and Titagarh Rail Systems, which is also ramping up production.
