The End of a Four-Decade Era
For nearly 40 years, the Passenger Reservation System, or PRS, has been the backbone of Indian Railways' ticketing. Introduced in 1986, it was a revolutionary step, moving the country from manual, ledger-based bookings to a computerised network. Developed
by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), this system has evolved over the decades, eventually enabling the online booking that now dominates travel. Today, nearly 89% of all reserved tickets are booked digitally through the IRCTC website and apps. However, this massive shift to online booking has pushed the legacy system to its absolute limit. While it has been upgraded incrementally, its core architecture was never designed for the kind of simultaneous, high-volume traffic it faces daily, especially during festival seasons and Tatkal windows.
A New Engine for Digital India
Recognising the need for a complete overhaul, Indian Railways is now deploying a next-generation, cloud-based PRS. The rollout, which began in August 2026, is a phased migration, meaning the new system will be introduced progressively to ensure a smooth transition with no disruption to passenger services. This new platform has been engineered from the ground up by CRIS to handle the demands of a digitally connected India. Instead of being hosted on fixed servers, its cloud-based architecture allows for dynamic scaling, meaning it can expand its capacity on demand during peak hours and shrink it during quieter periods, ensuring both stability and efficiency.
Power by the Numbers
The performance leap of the new system is staggering. The old PRS could handle approximately 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The new system is designed to process over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute—a nearly fivefold increase in capacity. The improvement in enquiry handling is even more dramatic. Previously, the system could manage about 4 lakh passenger enquiries per minute for things like PNR status, seat availability, and fare checks. The upgraded platform boosts this capacity tenfold, to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. For the average user, these numbers translate into a faster, more responsive, and far more reliable booking experience, with significantly fewer timeout errors and crashes.
A Less Stressful Tatkal Experience
Perhaps the most anticipated benefit of this upgrade is its potential to transform the high-stakes rush of Tatkal bookings. The mad dash at 10 AM and 11 AM creates a massive, instantaneous traffic spike that frequently overwhelms the old system. The new PRS, with its ability to handle over 1.5 lakh transactions a minute, is specifically built to manage these peak-load situations more gracefully. While demand will always be high, the system's enhanced capacity should mean that more users can complete their bookings without the platform freezing or crashing. Early data from the new IRCTC beta website, launched in July 2026 as part of this transition, has already shown modest improvements in the speed of Tatkal booking completions.
Smarter Features and a New Look
Beyond raw speed, the new ecosystem brings several other improvements. The system will leverage new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) to power features such as more accurate waitlist confirmation predictions. This helps passengers make more informed decisions about their travel. In parallel, the front-end user experience is also getting a facelift. The redesigned IRCTC beta website offers a cleaner, more intuitive interface with fewer steps required to book a ticket. Features like multilingual support will also make the platform more accessible to a wider range of users across the country. This focus on both back-end power and front-end usability promises a holistically better journey from search to payment.
