However, recent research suggests older adults may benefit from a slightly warmer temperature of around 24-25°C to reduce stress on the heart during sleep.

The advantages of a cooler sleep environment may extend beyond simply feeling more rested. Emerging research indicates potential metabolic benefits as well. Studies have shown that sleeping in cooler temperatures can increase the amount of metabolically active 'brown fat' in the body. Unlike white fat, which stores calories, brown fat helps burn energy to generate heat. After just one month of sleeping in a 19°C (66°F) room, study participants showed an increase in brown fat and improved insulin sensitivity, a key marker for metabolic health. These metabolic advantages were reversed when the temperature was raised to 27°C (81°F).
Cooling Tips for Every Indian Home
Achieving these cool temperatures can be a challenge, especially during Indian summers. While air conditioning is the most direct method, it's not the only one. You can create a more sleep-conducive environment by using fans to circulate air, opting for lightweight and breathable cotton or linen bedding, and avoiding synthetic fabrics that trap heat. Taking a lukewarm shower before bed can also help; as your body cools down afterwards, it mimics the natural temperature drop that encourages sleep. If ambient noise isn't an issue, opening windows at night can draw in cooler air. Simple adjustments to your routine and environment can make a significant difference.
