The First Rule: Book Immediately
The single most important step for festive travel is booking tickets well in advance. For train journeys, Indian Railways' booking window generally opens 60 to 120 days ahead of the travel date. Tickets on popular routes for Dussehra and Diwali often
move to a waiting list within minutes of opening. If you haven't booked by now, your options are dwindling. Log into booking portals immediately and be prepared with all passenger details. For flights and buses, prices surge as demand peaks, so booking now is still better than waiting until the last minute.
Mapping the Rush: The Busiest Corridors
Metros typically empty out as millions travel to their hometowns. Key railway stations like Howrah Junction in Kolkata, New Delhi Railway Station, and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus see massive footfall. High-traffic train and road routes include those connecting major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru to states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Rajasthan. Flights between Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai are also among the busiest in the country.
The Art of Smart Booking
If your preferred train is full, don't give up. Look for alternate trains, consider travelling a day or two before the peak rush, or book to a nearby station and arrange onward travel from there. Indian Railways often announces hundreds of 'Special' trains to handle the festive demand, which provides additional berths on high-density routes. Keep checking the official IRCTC website for these announcements. For flights, use aggregator websites to compare prices, but also check directly with airlines. Sometimes, booking a flight that leaves late at night or very early in the morning can be cheaper.
Beyond Trains and Planes
When direct trains and flights are unavailable or too expensive, consider alternatives. Premium inter-state buses offer a comfortable option and can often be booked closer to the travel date. For shorter distances, renting a car or using a carpooling service can provide more flexibility. Another strategy is the 'broken journey' approach: booking two separate tickets on less congested intermediate routes to reach your final destination. While it takes more planning, it can sometimes be the only way to secure a confirmed journey.
On-the-Go Strategy and Safety
Travel light to navigate crowded stations and airports more easily, but pack essentials in your carry-on. This includes a power bank, any required medications, snacks, and water. During festival season, public spaces become extremely crowded, so be mindful of your belongings. It is advisable to carry minimal cash. Dress comfortably and in layers, especially if your journey involves changes in climate. Finally, arrive at the station or airport much earlier than you normally would to account for long queues and security checks.
