What is Daylight Eating?
Daylight eating, a form of time-restricted eating (TRE), is a straightforward concept: you consume all your meals and snacks within the daylight hours and fast during the night. This isn't about what you eat, but when you eat. The goal is to realign your eating schedule with your body's internal clock, even when your work schedule is out of sync. For a shift worker, this might mean having your main meal before your night shift begins and avoiding food intake during your working hours overnight. This strategy aims to support your metabolic processes when they are most efficient.
Protecting Your Digestion and Metabolism
Your digestive system is not designed to be working hard in the middle of the night. Key metabolic processes, including insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, are highest during the day. Eating at night forces your body to process sugar when it's least equipped to do so, which can lead to elevated blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that night-shift workers who eat at night have higher glucose levels compared to those who only eat during the day. One study found a 6.4% increase in average glucose levels during simulated night work for those eating at night, an effect that was completely prevented by restricting meals to the daytime. By fasting overnight, you give your digestive system a much-needed rest and help maintain better blood sugar control, reducing a key risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.

The positive effects of daylight eating extend beyond digestion and blood sugar. Aligning your meals with the sun can also help mitigate other cardiovascular risk factors associated with shift work. Research suggests this timing strategy can help prevent the increase in markers for blood clots and helps regulate the autonomic nervous system. Animal studies have also found that time-restricted feeding helped prevent inflammation linked to circadian rhythm disruption. While your sleep schedule may still be disrupted, keeping your eating schedule consistent with the daytime helps anchor at least one major 'time-giver' for your body, reducing the overall impact of the misalignment.
Making the Switch Practical
Adopting a daylight eating pattern requires planning, but it's an achievable goal. Start by defining an 8-to-10-hour eating window during the day that works for you. Have a substantial, balanced meal before your night shift begins, focusing on protein, fibre, and healthy carbohydrates to promote fullness. If you feel hungry during your shift, opt for water or herbal tea instead of snacks. Breaking your fast after your shift should be with a light, nutritious meal to avoid disrupting your daytime sleep. It's crucial to stay well-hydrated. Dehydration can increase feelings of drowsiness, so keep a water bottle handy. The key is consistency, even on your days off, to help your body maintain a stable rhythm.
